NVIDIA never gave me any issues. Their drivers are definately more stable and they release updates for games with a quickness. Radeon Catalyst software is quite buggy, but when it all comes down to it, they are about equal. ( saying one or the other sux is redic) Most of the problems i believe to be with the methods of getting and installing the drivers. Then again i do not use the hardware drivers software or whatever that is, to install the driver. I always goto nvidia, download the whateveryourcardis.run and place it in /opt and killx, then sh the .run. It never mattered the distro and has always worked for me. Good instructions are NVIDIA the Hard Way.
