A few things about Ultimate Edition 3.2

Help & support for Ultimate Edition 3.2

A few things about Ultimate Edition 3.2

Postby TheeMahn » Fri Mar 16, 2012 6:00 pm

Ultimate Edition 3.2 was built of Ubuntu Oneiric Ocelot 11.10. Vast and I mean vast changes have occurred in the introduction of new environments. The Gnome 3 Environment I still call far from a stable environment. I must be honest I am still a Unity hater ;) That does not mean I should turn my back on our users. JohnnyG made the initial theme, I modded it slightly.

With that said, let's pull up a chair for a sec and learn a few new features / changes. Some of which has upset me, many I have implemented "Fixes" if you will.

Let's begin with the Gnome Classic / Fallback environments (the default desktop):
If you run wireless I suggest as a precaution to unplug your eth0 lan cable and verify everything works before installing. I would leave the lan cable unplugged until it is installed seems to want to default to eth0 even when not plugged in. After installed you should be golden.

I have added support for many Broadcom, Realtek and libertas chipsets.

I actually should have started with this actually it was the most upsetting & almost caused me to immediately dump the environment. You can no longer just right click your panel and click add to panel. You now have to hold down the alt key and the windows key then right click the panel. Would love to know the genius behind that adjustment ;)

Software it would take me weeks to discuss each application and it's function, let's drop a list of apps:
allsoftware.txt
(448.51 KiB) Downloaded 2217 times

Let's discuss a few specific to Ultimate Edition. I built a custom radio tray with help of wolfgar's list and a few admin to provide a larger variety of radio stations. Radio tray has a very small foot print, uses next to no resources. You can use radio tray even as you install, why not have some form of entertainment as we install, eat you heart out Windowz ;) Along the same lines I have built a new Ultimate Player, tons of streams there as well, has a smart bar to scan the internet for music you want to hear even if you do not have it. I have began witing software for a PS/3 remote that Meister gave me for testing. I have had great success, but do not currently feel production worthy. I also intend to make it play video making it truly the "Ultimate Player".

Time permitting I may bring Ultamatix back from the dead. Many things have changed in the way the O/S stores settings gconf is nearing the end of its life-cycle dconf & gsettings intend to replace it. I could say many things right here, but prefer to bite my tongue. Much learning I have done in this department. Hey where did my system menu go? Another change in their reign to destroy something that worked perfectly. I am from the land of it isn't broke don't fix it. They shifted anything from there and many more application launchers into a "Other" section. I have to say over all I am very satisfied with the performance and application availability.
The attachment wlan.png is no longer available

Many things that cover across the board I have accomplished, re-wrote the cursor pack, thanks for bringing back the issue gentlemen. Analytics of your packages I refer to Ubuntu in general many flaws I have found and fixed, why make compiz a "REQUIRED", sorry on occasion I may blow off steam be glad I bit my tongue earlier. This is not my first rodeo. Let me get back on track.

Unity (as said prior I hate it):

Does not mean I am going to rob you unity folks of your eyecandy, please tolerate the installation of Ultimate Edition 3.2 utilizing Gnome as your default environment. Boot back into gnome for the last time. Right click your fusion icon in the tray. PLEASE SELECT METACITY as your default manager, trying to save you the headache prior. Then right click again goto settings manager and enable unity plugin.

Log out and select unity in login window. Let me catch up with myself, Gnome 3 & XBMC will be covered as well. I will be impressed if we are still up tomorrow, I will attempt to continue then. Taking the flight of the Ἴκαρο ;)

So this is the final release 3.2.? I had some problems with the earlier not for production machine release so have stayed with 2.9 which I must say I love so I have high hopes for the 3.2. I loved 2.9 so much I removed XP completely and have just been using 2.9. for a few months, may have to put it back on a spare HD just to play games as wine and Play it on Linux just isn't there yet.
I have to say that after years of trying linux off and on Thee Mahn has finally changed the linux world for me at least, you should be proud of what you have given to the Linux community and I hope you get the recognition you deserve for it.

Does anyone know the login password for the liveDVD? I tried to logout to try a different desktop environment but it wanted a password.

Thanks

Boy that note on changing from Compiz to Metacity is CRITICAL! I got it sorted and happy I recalled seeing it in the thread so I could fix my system. Going from Gnome Classic to Unity and then back to Classic gets seriously borked if you don't change it to Metacity. Thanks for the heads up on that TheeMahn!

3.2 is awesome...absolutely awesome. So far flawless, even after adding Java 1.7, AMD Catalyst 12.2, all updates, etc. System is fast and runs COOL on my laptop. Ubuntu 11.10 ran pretty warm using Compiz as WM.

Thanks to all who took part in developing 3.2. Looks great (except for volume and battery icons!) and is blazingly fast. Even my Internet speeds are faster here than Mint 12, Ubuntu 11.10, Ubuntu 10.04, other Ultimate Edition versions, etc. No idea why, but true. Great job in the first move to Gnome 3 for Ultimate Edition!!! Beautiful work.

Hello impei,
I also have had the same problem.
Two options.
Either install to hard disk and use your normal password or write a new post titled " Password Problem with Live 3.2".
The admins first look at the posts heading, so if your problem is specific make a post with a specific heading, then the Admins and more experienced users will notice it and should respond quicker.Looking at this posts heading doesn't highlight an individual problem. Admins are quite busy so this will make it easier for them to help you. :D
Hope this helps!
