Ultimate Edition 3 run problems

Postby srblood » Wed Mar 14, 2012 3:33 am

I just recently downloaded The Ultimate edition from your website. Everything went well making a bootable CD, but when I tried to start the live option in the menu it crashes. Before I go any further I must say first that I have never touched a linux OS of any kind. Now saying that, the last line that appears n the bottom of the screen is "3.792292]sec 6:0:0:2 Attached enclosure device" and then it stops. I will be grateful for any help.

Hi srblood, and welcome to the forum.

My first thought is a bad burn, which could come from a corrupt download. You say CD, but I hope you mean DVD. Did you check the md5sum? If the numbers matched, did you burn at 4x speed?

Faster burn times are known to cause installation problems.

Firstly, you should check the md5sum on the file you downloaded. If it matches, burn again at 4x. If it doesn't match, you will need to download again.

May I suggest a USB install....usually quicker than a DVD. Unetbootin is a good tool for creating a bootable USB flash drive from an ISO. I have only come across one error with using it, and that is a prompt called boot when it starts up. Typing "live" without the quotation marks sends it on it's merry way.

Incidentally, I have deleted your other post as it was a duplicate of this one.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Hello srblood,
first you must be sure you are writing to a DVDR/RW and not a CD.
There is not enough room on the CD.
Second ,as you have been advised by kiwinsn you must use a slow burn, and not interrupt the process until you are sure it is complete.
Third, make sure you are using the right software to burn the downloaded .iso.
I have never burned an .iso using Windows so I don't know how relevant the last point is.My first Linux Installation was from a coverDVD on Linux Format. This was Linux Mint from which I have obviously moved on. I mention this because it may provide another option.
If you have a cover-disc with another live-bootable Linux -distro -Mint-Pingu,etc you can pop it in the drive and run that as a live-install. After it has loaded go to Applications>Sound & Video>Brasero ( or similar ) and after browsing for and selecting the U.E.iso-file, burn a new DVD from there. This process will work perfectly from the " live" option, though it may be a little slower.
However, as also stated by kiwinsn ,none of this matters if the mD5sum isn't right. If it isn't then the file is corrupt or incomplete.
Then there are two last options.
a/download a new iso-file
b/ go to linuxcd.org and order an already burned installation disc. There is a minimal payment including P&P which should be under £ 5.00 in total and the disc should be with you in two or three days.
All that I am or seem is but a dream within a dream.

sounds like a bad burn or download.

burn the iso again @ 4x if this doesn't work the iso may be corrupt.

I downloaded the IOS file again and ran the md5sum and I got a match. I then burned the IOS to a SUB drive and no problems. Once I have finished I booted using the computer that I recently constructed and It didn't like DVD drive and western digital 500G hard. I then tried booting it on my home theater PC. The result was that it started fine. Gave me the screen all the option in how to proceed selected the boot live option and then white screened, flickered and stopped. I then tried it on my laptop and it worked perfectly no problems what so ever. Could the problems on the other two computers be a driver issue?

Optical drives last about a year. I've got a whole box of broken ones. I just use a usb flash drive to install operating systems now.
To create a flash drive from an ISO:

I did make an USB drive bootable and for so reason it doesn't work on two of my machines, but it will work on my laptop. As I described the problems that I am have could this be some sort of drive issue.

Using windows, I tested all my hardware including that specific hd and everything works fine. I just downloaded Ubuntu 11.10 and it gave me the same xhci_hsd stalled endpoint.
