I solved my problem. it has to do with the nvidia (video) driver at startup.
here is what i did-
1. Boot up
2. at grub screen select recovery for the new kernel
3. when the blue selection box appears select load with limited(low) graphics option
4. you should have a 640x800 gui screen now
5. login
6. open a terminal and type- sudo apt-get update, then sudo apt-get upgrade
7. after that open additional drivers from main menu
8. uninstall/de-activate the nvidia driver, then REBOOT
9. reboot, login, then open additional drivers again and active the nvidia driver.
