dual boot

i need to have a dual boot system so i can use learn direct software on my box as unfortunately learn direct does not support firefox etc or any other platform other than IE. i tried using playonlinux bit since its open source it would not work.
i have had many dual boot systems before but now that im trying to resolve a software issue i had to reinstall both MS and Ultimate Edition. thing is after i installed MS and loaded software as needed i installed Ultimate Edition, but when it came to the install process where i choose to use either the entire disk or alongside another OS it failed to give me an option to partition the space for Ultimate Edition. normally there is a drag option available to resize the partition for Ultimate Edition.
i have installed Win7 x64 and UE2.9 x64. when i look in places to see if there is a partition for MS none is showing.

how to correct this when i now have to reinstall both OS's

Blackwolf, thanks it appears to be lots of work that never had to be done before!! i have tried to install Ultimate Edition first and then MS without any joy. i resorted to put my old 500 gig HDD back in and try once more and so far , as we speak im having success. once the install is done hopefully all will be ok. i'll use the 2TB HDD for additional storage. i have never seen or experienced this strange issue before.

you need to install windows first, than Ultimate Edition. grub will see windows, the windows boot loader will not see Ultimate Edition

1. windows

2. ultimate edition

grub should see windows at first boot, should it NOT. Just make sure grub-common and grub-pc is installed via synaptic and run

easy as that.

Guru, I believe I am running grub 1.9x - away from my Ultimate Edition box so I am saying that from memory. Question: is there any value to upgrading to grub 2? Is it even possible? Also I have heard about a grub replacement called "burg" do you know anything about it?

benefit to grub 2 is 2 fold from what I can see my self, I am sure there are more.

Better detection for operating systems .

Better over all stability.

Better remastersys support, once you make your own distro, grub 1 can brake when installing from live.

To upgrade, just use synaptic and remove all mention of grub.

Install packages in this order.

1. grub-common
2. grub-pc
3.startup manager
4. any grub custom screens like mint-grub-theme etc.

Then just run

sudo update-grub2

before restart.

As for burg, not ever had a reason to care. Grub 2 fully fits my needs and always has. It has yet to let me down once.

i agree but on this occasion it failed?? i have been using dual boots for some time now since 1.9 and i have never experienced this problem before. not sure if it the HDD causing issues as when i had MS installed on one of the many times it, MS, was not seen by Ultimate Edition in live mode?? the issue was that when it came to the partition manager to select partition size for Ultimate Edition i only had the choice to take over entire disk and not install next to another OS, even if this option was selected.
big thing is i now have a dual boot as before on my old 55 gig HDD and my 2 TB is now used for storage.
