11.04 Natty- Too buggy to use

Help and support for Ultimate Edition 2.9

11.04 Natty- Too buggy to use

Postby drewstew » Mon May 16, 2011 6:12 am

I bought a new second box at the weekend with no O/S, so thought I'd give 11.04 a go on a complete clean install. There are still major problems with this release.
It took 2 installs to get the Unity desktop - the first told me my Nvidia nForce 9200 card wasn't up to running it (hardly a cutting edge card, but 3d capable). The second install brought up Unity, and told me additional drivers were available. Downloaded the Nvidia drivers, but now it tells me they are "activated but not in use" - therefore no advanced visual effects available.
The biggest annoyance is the inability to shut down, restart, suspend or hibernate. Just hangs on a purple screen. All end with the power button having to be held. This whether initiated through GUI or Terminal. Happened also when I just booted off the cd without installing.
Only plus over other distros - wireless router picked up out of the box.
Funnily enough, not a lot on Google for these bugs, but I really hope these can be sorted before Ultimate Edition 3.0 is released. In the meantime, it's tried, tested and trusted, Ultimate Edition 2.9!

Been using Natty 11.04 final as my main on 3 systems for weeks since the first day 20 min after it was released.

It is stable and smooth, but took some know how to make it so. What I did was made my own guru ultimate edition. All enjoyed in Ultimate Edition 2.9 is fully enjoyed in 11.04 natty. Eye candy the works.

Just took some work was all, but well worth it.

Guru - Afraid my install is going from bad to worse. Been out for a couple of hours, leaving the new computer on. Now the panel's gone; the launcher sidebar has gone; and Ctrl+F2 fails to bring up a command line, even after a reboot. Only usable in Recovery mode running failsafe graphics. The only - and I mean only - thing that's working is "Change desktop background", oh, and the mouse!
I envy your expertise in getting this working, but I think the software is shocking.
It's coming off my box now!

First things first

Loose the unity BS and use classic. Unity is ill thought out and just flat out buggy.

Next

Enable all update ppa's and proposed updates but do NOT enable back ends.

Fully update the system including all proposed updates.

Let me know when your ready and will go from there.

Really grateful for your offer of help, but I've gone another way - I've installed Gnome 3 onto Natty from Recovery. All of a sudden - video drivers! panel! can restart and switch off! Found the instructions here if anyone else wishes to follow http://compixels.com/7664/how-to-instal ... ty-narwhal
I think Canonical have made a big mistake taking the Unity road over Gnome 3.

Thought that part quite clear.

Ultimate Edition 3.1 based on Ubuntu 11.10 the next planed release once (Ultimate Edition 3.0 is finalized based on ubuntu 11.04) , A OS planed to not offer classic desktop but unity only.

Thus Gnome 3 or planed next release of gnome 3.1 will be prime choice.

I do not believe there to be a more clear means of wording to make the statement any more simplified.

If you reread my statement you will see it is written in future tense .
