sound card issue (given own thread)

Help and support for Ultimate Edition 2.9

sound card issue (given own thread)

Postby billhedrick » Sun May 08, 2011 3:25 pm

I have discussed this and not figured it out. Thought I would put this into a separate thread,
I have tried Ultimate Edition 2.6.1, 2.8, 2.9, Ubuntu 11.04, Xubuntu 11.04 (and Stealth), and so far only 2.6.1 (and OZ unity 1.0) supports my sound card (onboard the MSI K9VGM-V)

So my question is: is there a way to use the sound drivers that work in 10.04 in UE3 or any other 11.04 variant?
I should be able to identify the drivers. Can I install them off the Ultimate Edition 2.6.1 live disk for example?

And this is in a real compact box, I don't think I can squeeze in another sound card.

Since I am just across the river in Minneapolis, I have a couple of sound-cards (a SoundBlaster Live and a Yamaha 4ch card) I could give ya if you are inclined to TRY to fit another sound card in. Not saying which direction you should go with the problem (I actually don't have a clue what the fix is) but just offering that as an option.

Stop the stress man, not worth it. Just pop in another sound card and call it a day.

Like I said, that board was a decent $45.00 board in its day. Sold many of them, but time has passed and support along with it. <BREW>

go with the Sound Blaster. Great cards that just work with Linux.

it sports a micro ATX board in a case that is about 12" x12" x 18" deep. There is one slot open next to the fan side of the video board, pretty tight.

I work evenings, so it would probably be best to try it this weekend. Unless you are available around 1am (and I can tell ya from experience that most people aren't...)

OK, bpollen helped, but my case is too small, i.e., the video card fan is right on top of the open PCI slot, to try to put in another full sized audio card. Also I can't believe Ubuntu no longer supports AC97 sound drivers. I did some digging in my 2.6.1 install and found the number of the working sound card. It's UT 1708/a and this thread seems to give a work around.

Now I am not trusting enough in my Ubuntu-fu to do this without having you guys look at it...

Also guru, I can't afford to replace the mobo right now, so that's not an option. Besides I alway favor a software solution before trashing the hardware
