Nvidia driver problem

Help and support for Ultimate Edition 2.9

Nvidia driver problem

Postby jonnotas » Thu Mar 17, 2011 2:25 am

I have downloaded Ultimate Edition 2.9 x86 and installed it.
After checking the MD5 sum was correct and the disk integrity tested ok, hard drive install went without a hitch.. I logged in and tried to install the nvidia-current driver for my 7600GS using System > Administration > Additional Drivers> (version current). It seemed to go well but on reboot it was not installed despite the "Additional Drivers" window insisting "This driver is activated and currently in use". I checked /etc/X11/xorg.conf had been created but it was an empty file.
I tried removing the driver and reinstalling but nothing had changed.
I then completely reinstalled Ultimate Edition 2.9 and tried again but the results were the same. I then removed the nvidia-current driver and tried the (version 173) driver which I know to work well with my video card but again no go.
I currently have 5 other versions of Linux installed including Ubuntu 10.10 and Kubuntu 10.10 which happily installed the nvidia-current driver without any problems.

My question is: Is this a known problem or have I made a mistake or should I suspect a faulty download and start again?

Re: Nvidia driver problem (solved?)

Postby jonnotas » Fri Mar 18, 2011 10:29 pm

Many thanks for the quick replies.

I tried the suggested fixes but it did not work for me. When I tried the steps supplied by Gúrú Linux ríomhaire I received a message which complained about missing kernel headers and when I tried to install them I got a "Cannot solve dependency problems" message.

Luckily I remembered a problem I had installing the Pinguy version of Ubuntu where the install crashed if I elected to encrypt my home directory. I have now reinstalled Ultimate Edition 3.9 for the third time but WITHOUT the encryption and everything works! Encryption is not essential for me but I wonder if there is a way around this?

The adventure continues.

header problem is a super easy fix,

synaptic package manager download and install the matching headers for the used kernel set.

Once done, just reinstall your nvidia drivers.

Follow this to reset your password.

Didn't think to mention the obvious to me lol

Not always obvious to others.

Seen this very often, ya think I would learn by now.

Thanks for the reminder.
