Internet Speed

Hello,
i am using 2.8 x86 with a cable connection with 32 Mbit (auto eth0 ) and all is running fine.
Only my internet speed was ok but sometimes not so ok. Now i have tested with speedtest.net and with a test from
my ISP . And i have only the halve speed (13-15 Mbit) with Opera and Firefox only Chromium goes up to 22 Mbit.
So I studied in the forums and tried a bit (MTU changing, disabled Firestarter) ) but no better. Only disabling IPv6 in Firefox helped a bit .
Now i tested the speed with my second OS on this machine 'XPpro' and i get 30Mbit all the time :o
So now i am not amused

Now i made a test with the live dvd . And bingo full speed !
So my actual system must have a speed break. But i have no idea where to look.
Anybody an idea or fix ?

Thanks

Code: Select all
Sudo ethtool -s eth2 speed 100

Use 1000 for gigbit connection

I will post more if I find anything else.

Thank you for helping.
But now i got a bigger problem. I did something wrong and have now the purple Ubuntu screen when booting.
Then asking for a login. When logging in with my user name and password it says welcome to Ubuntu and shows only the Terminal phrase al@al-Ms-7181:~$ on black screen. I typed in EXIT and it returns to asking for login
This is too much for me
Any help please

Thanks

If it isn't too much bother - reinstall the system and ensure you are connected to the Internet when installing the system. this should ensure all up-to-date packages get installed correctly.

It will be the easiest thing to do.

I have been running Ultimate Edition since around June of this year and have no Internet speed problems although, i have noticed that Chromium Web Browser runs faster at times but, is not so compatible with some pages and video.
I have ran Windows and have to use it at work and believe me, it is not quite as fast as Linux, especially on older machines. Although, your Internet test speed may be good, the rendering of the web pages is what matters. I don't have anywhere near the Internet speed you talk of but, I have no speed problems when using the Internet. Only when actually downloading might i notice a difference to what you have.

Firefox runs everything with the correct plugins.

There are tips on slimming down Firefox - do a search for speeding up Firefox.

Try the reinstall of the system first and if you have looked at enabling the video driver for your graphics card, DON'T.

The whole system can run a lot smoother with the built-in graphics handling. It might mean that you loose a little of the eye-candy but, the system in general will run more smoothly. Believe me I have tried and although, ATI try to give out the best drivers for the job they don't always work as well as the latest Ubuntu driver

Hope this helps.

I had the idea to clean up the system with COMPUTER JANITOR and trusted the solutions that showed up.
And what i remember is that it removed the UEbootsplash and over packages
I don\t know exact which ones . I trusted that it shows only the not needed packages , a big error !

Alright, Please do this.

1. Boot to live CD/DVD and backup your home folder.

2. Connect to the Internet in Live DVD to your wifi and DO NOT use keyring option. When asked to create password for keyring leave it blank. Then select keep using unsafe networking option. ( note : after install edit the connection to connect automatically)

3. Fresh install with it connected to wifi (use the wipe and use entire disk option)

4. Once installed First go to system/administration/additional drivers and activate your ATI FGLRX driver then restart ( Do NOT install any other drivers)

5. Now go to system/administration/update manager

6. check boxes for pre release and unsupported updates

7. click on other software and check all boxes

8. close and reload

9. click check for updates

10. update everything

11. restart

12. system/administration/startup manager

13. match these settings

Ok now that is done, you can now customize your needs for themes and borders.

Remember boarders are done via emerald theme manager

Please do it all in this order then post back, provide screen shots and let us know if anything needs fine tuned.

Wifi is a funny thing, it is radio wave based and 1 of 1000 items in the house or outside can effect radio waves technology. It might tell ya you have a strong signal, but if it wont connect , it is lying. There are SEVERAL kernel header packages installed threw the updates to improve wifi performance.

you clearly fracked up your install, now you know what not to do next time.

so yes, time to start over and do it right.

I got you confused with someone else on wifi.

Alright, Please do this.

1. Boot to live CD/DVD and backup your home folder.

3. Fresh install with it connected to Internet

4. Once installed First go to system/administration/additional drivers and activate your ATI FGLRX or Nvidia driver as applicable then restart ( Do NOT install any other drivers)

5. Now go to system/administration/update manager

6. check boxes for pre release and unsupported updates

7. click on other software and check all boxes

8. close and reload

9. click check for updates

10. update everything

11. restart

12. system/administration/startup manager

13. match these settings
