Nouveau and Nvidia Drivers

Help and support for Ultimate Edition 2.8

Nouveau and Nvidia Drivers

Postby buschbarber » Wed Dec 01, 2010 1:04 am

I have installed and been running Ubuntu 10.10 for some time. When I realized that Ultimate Edition 2.8 was out, I installed it. I had no problems installing the Nvidia 3D drivers for Ubuntu 10.10, but I cannot seem to install them under Ultimate Edition 2.8. It seems to have something to do with Nouveau.

I did some Google searching on the subject and saw a post that said to Edit the entry in the Grub Menu and insert the word nomodeset after quiet splash. I could also choose nomodeset when I installed from DVD.

Is there a way I can get the latest Nvidia drivers installed with Ultimate Edition 2.8? Is there a reason why Ubuntu 10.10 is different in this regard from Ultimate Edition 2.8

Thank you!!

Can you tell me in layman's terms what Nouveau is all about?

Just as an aside, I have downloaded and burned Ultimate Edition 2.8 several times both on Windows 7 64bit and Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit. Whenever I boot from it and try to and choose Test Disk, it hangs unless I hit F6 and choose nomodeset. Despite that, it always comes back with an error in one file OK1.debb.

When I burn OS's to DVD I always use the slowest speed.

Even after I purged Nouveau, I still could not install the latest Nvidia driver as I would receive the error message that the Nouveau driver needed to be disabled.

After installing the latest updates from Update Manager, I now have a Kernel ending in 23, and 22. I edited the Grub entry for 22 and added nomodeset. I booted and was able to install the latest Nvidia driver. I have not tried booting from 23, yet.

curious

I have installed 2.7 and 2.8 Ultimate Edition on a few systems now with 9800 GTX and 9800 GT GPU,s and have not had any problem installing nvidia drivers via additional drivers.

Never had to tweak a thing.

Once I added nomodeset to Grub, I had no problem installing the latest Nvidia drivers to 22. When I then booted in 23, it took me to a Terminal Mode Login. I installed the drivers, again, in the same way a 22, and they installed without incident.

I reinstalled Ultimate Edition 2.8 several times, just to be sure I was at a clean starting point. I did not reinstall again so I could see if it was really necessary to Purge Nouveau or it was just necessary to insert nomodeset. I have a stable system and the video driver I wanted.
