Problem w/ creating a launcher from menu app [Solved]

Postby marty6 » Fri Oct 22, 2010 8:02 am

Hi,

How can I create a desktop launcher from a program that's in Applications? I thought that I could right click w/ the mouse and had the ability to create the launcher from there. Can this feature in menus be enabled somehow?

Thanks,

marty6

marty6,
If you Left click on Applications, the point to one of the "catagories" of programs, such as Accessories, the click your Right Mouse Button on an item in that menu, do you see what I am showing in the following Screenshot?

Screenshot.png
Adding a program "Launcher" to the Desktop or Panel....

You will notice that my cursor is pointing to "Add this Launcher to Panel", clicking this item will place a copy of the Launcher on the Panel at the top of your screen, or you could select to place it on the Desktop.
Do you see this when you try to add the launcher??

Gentlemen,

Thank you for the replies. I'll try the drag and drop, geppettvs . TexasMike, yes, that's the menu. But, I don't see that at all. For some reason, it has been disabled. Is there a way of getting this back?

Blackwolf,

I did the uninstall/reinstall of Gnome-panel. The panel itself still does not show. If I right or left click the mouse buttons, the application still 'runs'. Can the panel itself be disabled or is this feature in 2.7 automatically set to work? I'm wondering if there is another program/feature that is overriding the panel from appearing.

jrphorbin,

I took a screen shot of what I discovered in ubuntu tweak. The manage scripts under Personal has the 'Enabled' scripts to the left and the 'Disabled' scripts to the right. At the bottom right you'll see that the 'create launcher' is disabled. Is there a way to get it back?

jrphorbin,

I was able to move those scripts over, but the situation remains the same with the 'right' click of the mouse button. All programs are still activated by the right mouse button....rather both left and right mouse buttons. Also, this came up before 'restoring' the desktop
Screenshot2.png
Tried to recover gnome from Ubuntu Tweaks. This didn't work either.

The lock system, lock screen, and log out show up under "system" in the upper left of the desktop. I had this problem before in 2.5. And, that was due to notebook menu being used. It's not currently installed.
Any suggestions appreciated!
Thanks,
marty6

Re: Problem w/ creating a launcher from menu app [SOLVED]

Postby marty6 » Sun Oct 24, 2010 4:41 pm

jrphorbin,

I moved on to Ultimate Edition 2.8. I did discover something interesting and recreated the problem. After following the 2.7 install guide and going to 'visual effects' and selecting 'custom: Uses custom set of effects' and rebooted, I lost the ability to use the panel once again. Before installing the any video drivers, I had the ability to use the panel that TexasMike pointed out to me one the first page of this post. Is there a way to keep my current use of the desktop and use the panels as well? Also, I'm wondering if it's the video driver installed because of going through the select 'custom: uses set of effects' and going the regular route of installing the proprietary drivers that Ultimate Edition asked for after the install? Or, are they the same driver?

marty6

btw .. here's the video driver info:

marty6@marty6:~$ cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep -i driver
[ 17.586] X.Org Video Driver: 8.0
[ 17.586] X.Org XInput driver : 11.0
[ 18.075] Module class: X.Org Video Driver
[ 18.094] (II) NVIDIA dlloader X Driver 260.19.12 Fri Oct 8 11:19:20 PDT 2010
[ 18.094] (II) NVIDIA Unified Driver for all Supported NVIDIA GPUs
[ 20.821] Module class: X.Org XInput Driver
[ 20.821] ABI class: X.Org XInput driver, version 11.0
[ 20.952] (II) No input driver/identifier specified (ignoring)

more info

marty6@marty6:~$ glxinfo | grep direct
direct rendering: Yes
GL_EXT_Cg_shader, GL_EXT_depth_bounds_test, GL_EXT_direct_state_access,

Solved it!

The problem was in ubuntu tweak. I checked off under Gnome settings "Complete lockdown of all panels" ... this took away the panel that I needed. Thank you for the help gentlemen! Love the 2.8 edition!!
