After my full install, it started with a log in screen. user and password. flashes a bunch of crap real fast and leaves me with a command prompt $ and so on. What is going on. Is there a site or forum that explains all this for new-to-unbuntu folks. We need more detailed instructions.

Hi Slopoke and welcome to the forum,

If you select recovery mode at the grub screen it will scroll a bunch of text and if it hangs and says errors let us know what they are so we can figure out the problem you're having. What this post is about is installing a newer kernel which may not have anything to do with your issue.

Did it start doing that from the start after the install ?
What are your system specs. like what graphics card do you have ?
At the command prompt after you login you can try
Code: Select all
sudo service gdm start

More details on what flashes like the error it gives would help us help you.

There are lots of guides but most are outdated I learned most of what I know from reading the forums.

This section is full of good info. How To's (Do not post questions please)

Your the champ. Thought I'd better clear up my question. On post before last, The boot problems were corrected with the kernel update. Got 2.6.35/rc3 generic etc. from the list you provided. There was one newer that was listed after your post. I got brave and followed your orders. Booted and bam! There I was. From a user, non really geeker person I can say This works great. Wife and kids are delighted. (uninterrupted video streams). If I can help form the home user point of view-x-windows family, please ask. Peace from Ohio.
Oh, and the boot problems were also related to the Nvidia driver install somewhat. I believe. I Kept re booting and on the third try it booted and said something about Nivida driver and booted. Guess it takes some time to get the driver working.

Hello khadafeeee.

well that sure can help on your issue.
The freeze is part of few processes that do on the same time some Actions.
I Advice to Upgrade your kernel to 2.6.34.
Just look on the Guide how to do it,you have to do the Upgrade like it is in the Guide.
After the Upgrade please Restart your machine.
Good luck.

khadafeeee .

Yes you can Delete the kernel From the synaptic => search - Linux Image.
There you will see the Kernels that are installed on your system.
Just be very careful with the Deleting process, and do not Delete the 2.6.34 Kernel.
So you will have Back up for your kernel.

well done there khadafeeee .
