In windows I can control the flow of audio from my external speakers or my headphones and I can switch between each. Right now I get audio through both but when I try and set my audio settings to output only through my headphones it wont work. No audio comes out. The ONLY way I can get it to force audio through my headphones is by unplugging cables and I dont want to do that for fear of wearing out my audio ports. Wierd enough Ido switch between the both because I have kids that nap :) Any direction would be greatly appreciated.

Hi marcin and zombiewhisperer. I believe Admin-Amir addressed this issue for you here
Admin-Amir wrote:BTW - about your Question IDT 92HD73C1X5- here is your Answer for that:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... bug/568973

Runing Lucid beta 2 on a brand new Dell Studio XPS 16. This laptop has two headphone jacks. Plugging headphones into either jack mutes main speaker audio, but audio does not play back through the headphones.

The headphone jacks are confirmed to work under Windows 7, but I have not tried it under any other version of Linux.

Changing the "Connector" option in Sound Preferences to either "Analog Headphones" or "Analog Line Out" has no effect.

And further down the page you'll find some useful info. for fixing it.

Please use linux-alsa-driver-modules-$(uname -r) from ppa:ubuntu-audio-dev.

First you add the ppa:ubuntu-audio-dev
like this
Code: Select all
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-audio-dev/ppa

and update your sources with
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update

Then run
Code: Select all
uname -r

This will give you something like
2.6.32-22-generic

You then replace the $(uname -r) part with that info so it looks like this
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install linux-alsa-driver-modules-2.6.32-22-generic

If that fails remove the generic from the end of it like this
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install linux-alsa-driver-modules-2.6.32-22

Please read the comments on the page that Admin-Amir linked to, it's really short once you get past the specs. section and will tell you what to do if it stops working. Posts #5 and #6.

I have read the information and followed the directions to the T, but It may be that I just need to reinstall the whole OS because I am also having other issues alongside the audio that SHOULD work with your directions and are not so I'll reinstall and try it again fresh.

Audio quality is very poor. I'm not blaming distro, but the drivers.

I was shocked  ,when i played a song(first time tried to hear songs). Audio driver for linux is worst :x . Is there any way to make it better  .

init: video: misc
init: gl
Renderer: GeForce 7050 / nForce 610i/PCI/SSE2 (NVIDIA Corporation)
Driver: 2.1.2 NVIDIA 195.36.24
init: console
init: sound
Audio devices:
AL lib: oss.c:173: Could not open /dev/dsp: Device or resource busy
OpenAL Error (A004): invalid operation, line 1409
sound initialization failed!
init: cfg
unknown command: addallfavcatmenus
init: models

Hello lindows .

For me all your errors are correct!
First you need to install the Multimedia Guide,
Then you need to mark on Wine all the sound Drivers in the configure.
This will solve for you all the errors that you have post here.

No running games via wine not a issue they produc sound, the problem is with linux version games(all of them),I installed alien arena, assault cube via synaptic. The only thing that i compiled after OS installation was openal-soft and again everything was running fine .But when i went to play today morning,i found out that there is no sound. Also I have multimedia guide installed

The games produce sound after i play some music files(what relationship is this)

And the output is like this

ankit@ankit-ubuntu:~$ assaultcube
init: sdl
init: net
init: world
init: video: sdl
init: video: mode
init: video: misc
init: gl
Renderer: GeForce 7050 / nForce 610i/PCI/SSE2 (NVIDIA Corporation)
Driver: 2.1.2 NVIDIA 195.36.24
init: console
init: sound
Audio devices:
Sound: OSS Software / OpenAL Soft (OpenAL Community)
Driver: 1.1 ALSOFT 1.12.854
init: cfg
unknown command: addallfavcatmenus
init: models
init: docs
init: localconnect
read map packages/maps/official/ac_complex.cgz (19 milliseconds)
Industrial Zone - by makkE
game mode is "team deathmatch"
init: mainloop
writing to file: config/servers.cfg
writing to file: config/saved.cfg
ankit@ankit-ubuntu:~$

And after this when i logout and again load up any games i get the previous error output till i play some music files
