AAhhh...the afterthought of backup.
Bookmarks in Firefox are in it's on folder (home/.mozilla).
The . preceding means it is hidden, but ctrl-h reveals hidden folders....copy everything inside the (random nmbrs/letters).default folder.
After installation, run Firefox then close it. Go back to the home/.mozilla folder and open the new (random nmbrs/letters). default folder and paster what you had backed up in there.
From Vista, It's the favourites folder you need to backup, and then when starting Firefox, you get the option to import the Favorites from IE.
That is, of course, in case you were using IE in Vista.
Wth Firefox, I am sure thereis an addon to backup/restore your settings...just a matter of ensuring the add-on is installed with Firefox when you go to restore it.
Hope this helps.
