One thing I had to do was go into my bios, and disable the Memory Hole Remapping option.Theres a documented bug that this option conflicts with GRUB2.

The error I was getting is initrd is too big

As soon as I did this I was peachy.

Karmic installs just fine, Ultimate Edition does not

Hi guys and gals, let me give a little backstory...When 9.10 first released I tried doing the update manager upgrad from 9.04 option and my system would not boot, it would go to a busybox screen which i will show in detail later in this post. So I tried the clean install of 9.10 but the installer only saw my 2 hard drives as one raid drive. I did a workaround of this problem by loading the live cd with the "no dmraid" option and once the live cd was on screen I had to go into synaptic and remove all instances of anything mentioning dmraid. This allowed the installer to see my 2 hard drives correctly and I was able to install 9.10 easily afterwards.
Now I get Ultimate Edition and think that since it is a derivative of Karmic i should not have any issues other than what i already knew about. I was mistaken, sadly. I still had to do the workaround for the drives to be seen, as expected, but at some point during the livecd there is always a crash of some kind (devdisks, or synaptic crashing) but i just close synaptic and run it again and all seems well. I get the install going, it finishes, I reboot and Kablamo, I get that busybox screen again like I got when i was trying the upgrade option. This is what my screen looks like:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
mount: mounting /dev/disk/by-uuid/8345460c-02a4-427e-81b0-5188f681d76d on /root
failed: Invalid argument
mount: mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: No such file or directory
mount: mounting /sys on /root/sys failed: No such file or directory
mount: mounting /proc on /root/proc failed: No such file or directory
Target Filesystem doesn't have /sbin/init.
No init found. Try passing init = bootarg.

Busybox v1.13.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.13.3-1ubuntu7) built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

(initramfs)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am dual-booting with Win7 on sda and Ubuntu on sdb. I am following the exact same procedure i use to get Karmic to install, so I am really at a loss here. I have tried both the 64bit and 32bit Ultimate Edition versions

Thank you kindly for any and all help!

rdg123,

I was referring to post there.

Any way try this option please, and see if that will solve the problem.

All I did to fix it was try to install the GRUB bootloader on my Windows (Master) HDD, using the Alternate CD (Install CD).

I had tried a GRUB install (on windows/master HDD - and corrupted the boot process [leaving me only with the Live CD for my working OS]) with the Live CD but it messed up, most likely because the Live CD install doesn't really work for most users. When I got the Alternate CD I first tried to use the LILO boot loader running off my Linux HDD, that didn't work though I did set the BIOS to boot off the slave HDD (to prevent the corrupted GRUB from interfering). Then I as I started this post, I installed GRUB on the master and it work fine. Can boot to either OS, it's sweet.

rdg123,

You can disconnect your drives except the one to be used for Ultimate Edition, and install. Then reconnect your drives, after your sure the single boots, and logs in.

This is how I actually do it.Its a sure fire way to get it to work....or at least eliminate a few variables for trouble shooting

I will try this cell, the only thing that makes me curious is that Karmic will work just fine but during the install process of Ultimate Edition is the only time i get crashes...whether it be synaptic crashing or when the installer is almost finished devkits-disks-daemon crashes. Every time.

So did I. ;)

I'm assuming your md5sum is correct?

I usually just blow right past them(the crashes)...doesn't matter to me as long as I get the OS installed on my drive. If after I have an issue because of the crashes then Ill take care of em...doesn't make sense to do it while using the live dvd ;)

As for not getting the errors with ubuntu karmic...well Ultimate Edition is built off an earlier version then the karmic official release. So once you get the OS installed do an update...should clear up the issues.
