ok I guess I will give it a try. The main reason for just wanting to do the update versus full install is because I run setiathome on the laptop plus some other stuff that does not live in /home

I would think with any app if you save the config file you should be able to use it after the install. You might have to install it again, but plug in the configuration that your present install is using...It might not work, but its worth a try.

yes the setiathome config is in my /home so not worried
BUT I just tried to install on the laptop and the prepare partitions
is not seeing my usb drive that has 4 of my ext4 partitions on it
but when I run gpart, it seeing them all and show them as mounted ?
Also, and not sure if it is related, I got a crash report from devkit-disks-daemon
crashed with SIGSEGV in dbus_g_method_return_error()
never had a problem with any distro not seeing my usb drive during an install ?
Thanks !

Grub2 is still beta.Theres going to be kinks. If your installing on your laptop then just unplug the usb drive...or am I missing something?I got those errors also....like I said I wasn't worried about them. All I cared about was installing the os on my drive. As soon as I logged in I updated(might have to have the all the repos enabled, and open the backports.),and there was an grub update. It will ask you some questions.I picked the first option.

or am I missing something

yes ! I guess I was not clear enuf :)
I have XP and /home on the laptop and the rest of Ultimate Edition 2.3 on the USB drive
I don't travel much now that I am out of work-long haul truck driver-so this set up works fine at home
When I set up Ultimate Edition 2.3 it had no problem seeing all my partitions ?
Pretty hard to set up 2.4 if it can not see my existing ext4 partitions :(

Gotcha. I think the problem is its not seeing your usb drive in general....or does it?If your usb drive is mounted before you want to install then unmount it,and then see if the installer sees it.

well when I boot into 2.3 it does !
this time booting off the 2.4 dvd it does not auto mount them-the partitions on the usb drive
I check with gparted and they are not mounted
so I ran the install and same problem-it only sees the laptop drive
so I mounted the ext4 partitions on the usb drive and as soon as I started the install they got unmounted :( ?
is it possible to make another iso with the old grub ?
I am sure I am not the only one who has a Linux install on a USB drive
Thanks for the help but till I can get this solved, looks like I will be staying with 2.3

Hello alanwall .

The way I see it,you have to install in Advanced few packages in synaptic,
so when you install the system on your flash Drive they will help you with this issue.

here are the packages that you will need to install in Advance.

do the process with UNetbootin.

Thanks !
Since I am still kind of new to Linux, will I do the process on 2.3 or from 2.4 live ?
and is UNetbootin done from the console as sudo ?
Thanks to all for helping me with this issue.Hope it will help the next person with the same problem !
when I hear back will try it :)

o I mounted the ext4 partitions on the usb drive and as soon as I started the install they got unmounted

this is normal. In order for the partitioner to work the drive has to be unmounted....You can't install an os to a mounted drive, because then you can write to it while its being installed....which will basically bork it.

I understand what your trying to do now...install to a usb drive.I can see if I can do it as soon as I make a re-master of my os on my usb drive.

If you post some screen shots of the installer partition bit it might be helpful too.
