I found a solution that worked for me on the ubuntu board:

Re: Toshiba Satellite A135-S4487 - First (Rather Strange) Audio Problem

I have Toshiba A135-S4666 laptop and had the same headphone issue in Hardy and Intrepid. The following modification fixed the headphones in both instances:

First make a backup of your alsa-base file in case something goes wrong you can always revert back to the original.
Code:
sudo cp /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.backup
Next edit your alsa-base file:
Code:
gksu gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
then scroll to the bottom and add the following line..
Code:
options snd-hda-intel model=lenovo
Save the file and then reboot. My headphones worked fine after adding that line.

Now, if this does not work on the S4487, the model=lenovo line may need to be slightly different. If this does not work for you, let me know and I will try and dig up the site that has a list of alternatives.

Hope this helps,
Metol

Note: Some files were not found but continue editing the main thing is to add the option line to the alsa-base file which in my case was blank so I just added the line and saved the file and rebooted.
