Well i just installed 2.1 32 bit.watching tv,downloaded the media stuff, surfing the web..........NO PROBLEMS.I mean wtf?lol I didn't have to disconnect any cables or anything <BREW> kinda wanted to trouble shoot the challenges most have been having :D IT JUST WORKS! good job!Another thing i took Pch.shot's advise and used unitbootin.first time too,and it was easer than burning a damn dvd, also a whole hella lot faster in installing.I didn't time it but I think it was around 10 min's or so.I guess im out of the dark ages now using new technology, out with the dvd's <BREW>

side note:i did have too tell my bios too boot a usb drive.

I begrudgingly purchased a sata dvd rw for my new build(LG-That's the only brand I will buy 40 bucks). I do periodically rent or borrow a dvd so I broke down.
I guess your next move is to try this but you need to put in that extra ram:
Download the bundle version of VMPlayer for Linux.
http://www.vmware.com/download/player/ (registration required)
Make the file executable.
Click on it and select run in terminal.
Let it do it's thing.
Then go here: http://bagside.com/bagvapp/index.html and download the pre built versions of the distros you would like to try out(unzip them with xarchiver- install from Synaptic).
Re-boot
Start up VMPlayer and point it to the unzipped vmx file.

Ill give it a go.Is there a major difference between that and vbox?Iallways used vbox to play with other distro's.But first im going to dig out that ram,and install 64 bit back on the main hd,and wipe out all my "hard work"with 2.0  Ill get mythtv backend back up,and my window game back up.Im thinking about keeping my window game on a separate drive from the os to keep disk searching down when playing em.You think its necessary?or am i just thinking too hard? drives are ide also.

The biggest difference is that VBox is much easier to install an operating system on. To install an operating system on VMPlayer you need to use a Windows program called VMX Builder. I have yet to successfully install XP using it(it keeps crashing about half way through). I have had success with a few LInux distros. I prefer VMPlayer myself, but that is just personal taste. I have been experimenting with KVM/QEMU and virt recently.
Some people just have Linux on one drive and Windows on the other and just go into their bios to boot to whatever. The trick is when you install Linux unplug your other drives when you do the install that way grub won't muck up your Windows mbr. You might save this link just in case something horrible goes wrong and you can't boot Windows.

I get what your saying.I don't use windows on this machine.I have a 20 gig partition that has installed window games on it.(from a previous installation of xp)its the only way I found that wine will play theses games.Wine wont install them right. Its little trick I found out about few years ago,and wouldn't you know they run faster with wine, and with better fps's...............anywho, I have to get busy.oh yah,i have a cd that will fix the boot manager up if I muff it up.been there before. ;)
I did put the mem in,and seen an big improvement.

Hello,

This version 2.1 boots up fast from the live DVD and I had no problems installing it onto my 320 gig sata drive. I had to turn off several repos that returned errors and was only able to do a partial upgrade until I did that. Ultramatix wouldn't install PICASA, but I used Synaptic to install it just fine. I love this version! I can't imagine how it will improve with the new Jaunty!

I was a bit timid to install 2.1, because I didn't want to have to reinstall everything I had done after installing 2.0, but with the advice of backing up my home folder and doing a mark save (I think that's what it's called) in Synaptic I was able to install and reconfigure 2.1 without a hitch. The main thing I'm happy about is all of the effects in compiz finally work whereas before not everything would, but I have to say 2.1 is one of the best versions I've used yet and I look forward to the future releases of UU.
