Not sure if anyone really changes their fonts from the standard that is set within the system, but for those that like to will give some warnings and advice. Recently I decided on a fancier look to Gnome 3.8 Flashback on Ubuntu 13.04 and wound up in utter kaos! I switched to urw chancery l in Gnome-Tweak. Of course I was unaware as others may be that themes that are not standard to Gnome have wording in it that will confuse the Gnome-Flashback desktop and cause the upper taskbar to be blank. Seems any reference in a non-standard theme that mentions font size will interfere with the system. Unfortunately, and I am also very guilty on this point is those of us that write these themes did not take into consideration others will use a different font style. Most standard themes are written with no mention of font size or type so the user can change to any font or size they wish. Another point, which I also muffed on creating a few themes is taskbars in 3.8 flashback can be made to appear transparent when the user presses "super user" + "alt" on keyboard and right click on mouse to bring up a small window which will list adding to panel, properties, delete panel and new panel. Simply click on properties which brings up another small window which has two areas one for panel adjustments in General and in the Background category you can choose solid color which will give the transparency effect. Looks quite nice and have stated many times was one of the reasons I had looked forward to Gnome 3.8. Now as far as Classic and Gnome desktops the regular adjustment in Gnome Tweak for fonts will have no effect. The only way to change to a new font in those desktops is to specify it in the files. Open terminal sudo or gksudo nemo, nautilus, etc then open usr/share/gnome-panel/themes both gnome shell.css and gnome-classic.css have to be opened in gedit, geany etc and first line (example only) font-family: urw chancerly 1,cursive needs to be added to each file. This will then tell the system to use those fonts while on those desktops. Why those 2 desktops do not take commands from Gnome-tweak is beyond me but the fix is not so hard at all!!! Hope this helps those that want a little classier look as I know I do! Always say if you got it, use it!!!
