Ouch! Not so great with the config files yet! Do not really have much Unity in my OS at all, and mostly believe is the reason is running pretty smooth! I would love to know what exactly has to be done with the config though as would love to check it out sometime. I still have Ultimate Edition disks and can run them in Vbox. Would like to learn this as am sure will help with other things. As I say lack in the admin stuff! Only thing that keeps my OS afloat is all is good software!!! Have always been good at putting things together! Now if I could just gain more of the important skills, maybe I can do some great systems for all!!!! Do not blame you Xan for being sour on the Cinnamon desktops, but maybe with different ideas we may come to some happy medium to make it better for others!!!! More minds on it the better!!! I still lean towards window management as whenever I have had any issues has been because of some setting in Cinnamon that does not agree with any window manager. I mean as have said, I am only running GDM for Window management and I get issues once in a while. I do not get issues going from Gnome Classic to Cinnamon but is usually the other way!!! Is awesome to have all this brilliance here! As always we are lucky Ultimate is infused with sheer genius!

Lets take a pchshot at this......http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2006/12/msg02899.html

So...I guess you could use Gnome Display Manager or Mint Display Manager. I pretty much use ldm but like kdm as well. On my other systems I use gdm. Doesn't matter as long as it's not pink and says Ubuntu when I log in.

Insofar as window managers Cinnamon uses Muffin and only muffin as far as I know. So no compiz, no kwin, no custom eye candy. Ultimate Edition without Eye Candy would be the worst unless it's lite and 3.4 lite is ready to go with compiz, right out of the box.

Man Cinnamon has built-in effects so you don't need any compiz + compiz-fusion-plugins-extra is obsolete check this http://www.ubuntuupdates.org/package/core/quantal/universe/base/compiz-fusion-plugins-extra and that means you won't have any burn or beam effects on Ultimate Edition 3.6   and FYI though being eycandy and all, compiz causes malfunction to many apps.

Doesn't matter. If I can't make a completely useless cube thingy or wobble windows, what's the point?

You'll be having the same effects available in Cinnamon and the only difference is that you have them preinstalled and preconfigured on Cinnamon while on other DE's you have to DIY :D :D Plus I can't see why you have Cinnamon!! We can have them all on Ultimate Edition 3.6 and you'll have Mate desktop for compiz but plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz no Unity

Architecture used and different hardware, eventually dictate what can be used.
KDE 4.10 in reality, is a successor to kde 3.5

Fancy Typewriters <BREW>

I don't hate Cinnamon. It hasn't worked in the past 2 Ultimate Editions for me. Maybe it's User Error.

Am no genius at all this, is for sure! I just theorize since Cinnamon was based on Gnome 2 somewhere along the line things are not lining up with more modern software. I do know the difference between X11 and Window management to an extent, but once again no genius! When I had to issue the command Cinnamon --replace I read the error messages. Messages as did it several times. Everything made reference to sizes, so that is where I have based my assumptions. Since I have noticed icons and tasbars are the main issue, I just figure might be on the right track. Of course since I lack the knowledge, will take me quite a while to figure something for it!!!! Most likely someone will beat me to it!!! Muffin/Gnome are like bread and butter in my estimation. Now I never have to get drastic issuing the command switching from GC to Cinnamon. I only have a problem here and there icons not appearing on desktop and improper window disply when going from Cinnamon to GC. This does not happen every time just once in a while. I just assume the differences between these desktops are clashing in file management. Any insight into a resolution would be great for all operating systems using Cinnamon. I believe whatever this problem is if solved will make it possible for Ultimate to have the Cinnamon desktop without hassle.

I just meant to show you that the display manager is not always a factor in window management. You like building distros. I like wobbly windows. I know nothing of distro builds. I am somewhat sad as Ultimate Edition 3.4 lite/2.6.7 and Kali KDE(new Backtrack..built Debian!) are out and I want to use all of them..but I like all of my systems....it's too much...aaaagh. Cinnamon is built from Gnome 3. Muffin is a fork from the Gnome 3 Window Manager.
