SHOCK! AND AWE!

Postby onosendai58 » Tue Dec 06, 2011 2:13 am

OnoSendai58, (Randy), aka Gripey Gus, is raving about something! (IKR?) Tonight my heart was hurting about a grief I can`t seem to get over. I did what I rarely do anymore and bought some brew, came home, turned the lights out, plugged in my "twirly light", (a fountain that spins a fractured globe lit by colored lights), and put a USB stick into my Xbox360 for some zone time. I played some best of the `80`s, then Motley Crue, but nothing seemed right. Then I started Steely Dan: Discography and let it play. It was the balm for my soul. I guess the whole point of this topic is to ask the question: Can anyone categorize the music of Steely Dan? More importantly, what does it mean to you as a listener? To me it`s a velvet glove with sometimes edgy caresses. Has there ever been a band like them? I mean, you can`t pin them down to one genre. I guess you`re wondering what I think. I would say "post-modern jazz with social commentary". See what I mean? I like the idea of jazz, but the way it`s been done, (with the exception of Bix Beiderbecke, a sad story, that), never got to me, with the exception of maybe Herbie Hancock with Bitches Brew and Rockit. Steely Dan almost seems timeless, in the true sense. They seem beyond our time, while still jamming our bodies with toe-tapping rhythms and making our minds think with thought-provoking ideas.

No offense. I have skin like a rhino. It is like Steely Dan without the terrible singing.

I'm down about the jazz thing; it's not for me. Love my Blues :D Steely Dan is like a fusion to me: not in the traditional sense of ( a cross between this and that). Like many bands it depends on the song and even the album. Even some of my favorite groups will release a cd I don't like. For whatever reason they might have a particular theme, be headed in a certain direction, or trying to touch upon a distinct feeling or message.Fagan and the boys have some albums that touch the blues a bit while others are straight up rock and roll, and others maybe a bit jazzy; not to be confused with straight out jazz.Hope you got through what it was that you were having a tough time with :) WitchyWays out.
