OnoSendai58, (Randy), aka Gripey Gus, is raving about something! (IKR?) Tonight my heart was hurting about a grief I can`t seem to get over. I did what I rarely do anymore and bought some brew, came home, turned the lights out, plugged in my "twirly light", (a fountain that spins a fractured globe lit by colored lights), and put a USB stick into my Xbox360 for some zone time. I played some best of the `80`s, then Motley Crue, but nothing seemed right. Then I started Steely Dan: Discography and let it play. It was the balm for my soul. I guess the whole point of this topic is to ask the question: Can anyone categorize the music of Steely Dan? More importantly, what does it mean to you as a listener? To me it`s a velvet glove with sometimes edgy caresses. Has there ever been a band like them? I mean, you can`t pin them down to one genre. I guess you`re wondering what I think. I would say "post-modern jazz with social commentary". See what I mean? I like the idea of jazz, but the way it`s been done, (with the exception of Bix Beiderbecke, a sad story, that), never got to me, with the exception of maybe Herbie Hancock with Bitches Brew and Rockit. Steely Dan almost seems timeless, in the true sense. They seem beyond our time, while still jamming our bodies with toe-tapping rhythms and making our minds think with thought-provoking ideas.
