Error message during install...

Error message during install...

Postby Yuanci » Wed Feb 18, 2009 5:55 pm

I downloaded and burned ver 2.0 and keep on getting an error message during the install saying "An attempt to configure apt to install additional packages from CD failed." What exactly does that mean? (BTW: I'm really new with the linux thing... I decided to switch to it now because I was getting tired of Windows being stupid...)

When I press okay it goes on installing it. However, when I try to boot, it gives me a message saying "NTLDR missing. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart."

That is not the solution(did you read it?-The bios is looking for a Windows boot loader and can't find one). It looks like your grub boot loader did not take. We will need more details.
How did you install. Are you dual booting another operating system? What hardware are you using?
You can edit your boot loader or fix it with this:

I read it, but didn't really come up with a solution from that (I said I'm new to these things...). I'm basically replacing windows with it, so I wanted a clean install (no dual boot, or anything; I had backed up all my files and wanted to reformat and such).

Sorry... I'm not really sure of my computer specs... I have 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Dual, 4 Gb ram... I was installing it on my hardrive... I just followed the instructions on the install thing. I did, however manually do the partitioning (because the other options gave me errors). I deleted all the partitions I had before and made a new one (100 Gb) for the OS and the rest (~900 Gb) I'm going to use for storage... Ah, my harddrive is a SATA...

Well, you can either read all the documentation about Super Grub and fix your boot loader or install again. Which ever is easier for you. I would choose re-install myself(on my PC it takes 20 minutes).
To re-install. Boot up the live disc and go to Partition Editor(System-Administration) and format the partition(as ext.3) where you will be installing Ultimate(be careful not to wipe out stuff you want to keep). Also, set up a swap partition of around a gig or so. Then, hit the install button. When you get to the partitioner choose manual and edit that partition to be used as primary ext3. The mount point is /(you can set up any other mount points for other partitions at this point as well). If you want to reformat the partition check the box. Depending on your machine it will take between 20 minutes(on a newer machine) and an hour(on a really old one).
