Installation process freezes my PC every time :-(

Postby klaase » Mon Feb 02, 2009 8:53 am

Heyllo,

i downloaded the Ultimate Edition 2 64bit VErsion and started it without problems. But when chosing install, it hangs up every time. I already checked my memory for about half an hour, tried to install in default language or reduced all details to avoid any grafics problem, but the installation process still freezes at different stages :-(
Is there any idea what the reason could be? My PC should be more powerfull than the minumum requirements are. amd 64bit ee-6000 (2x 3GHz) with 2Gb ram and 7900gtx grafics card with 512MB. Installing a 8.04 or 8.10 Ubuntu was never a problem so far.

Do you have any USB connections...except for your mouse and keyboard...in place... :?:
Note: If your keyboard has USB..outlets...that could be a prob..If you have a printer, hooked up..that could be another...lot of possibilities out there..we will get you going

Thx, i'll try tonight to disconnect all unnecessary usb-devices and to install it. Maybe i'll get a different version, but i think the error is not due to the specific version.

Here are some options to try:
Set up your partitions with gparted live: http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php or the partition tool of your choice. Make sure to set up a root partition / and at least a 512 meg swap partition.
Download and install unetbootin: http://lubi.sourceforge.net/unetbootin.html
Copy the iso to a 2 gig usb flash drive.
Go into your bios and set it up to boot from your usb drive.
Now install.
If you need to alter your boot loader try this: http://www.supergrubdisk.org/
Unless you have a lot of ram(2 gigs +) it is always best to set up your partitions first.
F.Y.I. Ubuntu 8.10 is not comparable to Ultimate(it is less than 700 megs and Ultimate is 1.8 gigs).
It is a simple matter of size and the technology. The laser on a dvd optical drive is much narrower. There is more chance of error when you are writing to a dvd with 1.8 gigs of data as opposed to 700 megs of data on a cd. Optical drives are quirky at best!! I have stopped using them for the most part. Basically, I only use an optical drive at gun point now!!!
These are just a few options. They may or may not work for you but you will learn a whole lot in the process.
