The correct way to calculate it is to take your initial "bit" and divide that number by 8 to find your actual speed, or your "byte"...
Roughly a 10mb connection will get ~1.25MB/s download speeds, not including your burst rates. :p
10 / 8 = 1.25
My connection on the other hand is a 15mb connection(Down Rate)... I usually get everyday download speeds of around 1.9MB/s..
15 / 8 = 1.875
