Updating problems

Postby Kevbert » Mon Oct 13, 2008 6:31 am

Hi. A number of people have been having trouble updating software and have posted on the Ubuntu forums website. The problem has been with the sources.list file. The problem seems to be with this line:
Code: Select all
deb http://repoubuntusoftware.info harty all

where the line should read
Code: Select all
deb http://repoubuntusoftware.info/ harty all

Please see http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=5956464 as an example. Please comment.

Actualy the line should read:

Code: Select all
deb http://repoubuntusoftware.info/ hardy all

However when this is addressed you'll get a different error: The following has been pasted from the update-mangers report window

Failed to fetch http://repoubuntusoftware.info/dists/ha ... ackages.gz 404 Not Found
Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

Not sure which index files may have failed here! However the update manager reports that there's 2 new upstream bug fixes for java6 now

I'm a little unsure how to proceed from here.

A reply for both of you. The repoubuntusoftware.info listing in your sources.list is the address of the Ultimate Edition repository, which recently went down. I do believe it is back up again (I cant test right now, not using Ultimate Edition  )

I do believe that the address originally posted is correct though. The release of Ultimate Edition was code named 'Harty Hotrod' and therefore should be listed as 'harty' not hardy. Hope somebody else can come confirm this soon. ... hint hint hint ...

PS, all you'll need to do for now to fix this is open up your sources.list and put a # infront of this address, save and exit. Then go back to terminal and do a 'sudo apt-get update' to refresh your sources.

Ok DaddyX3 thanks for the clarification!

However a different error occurs when this is corrected. (again pasted from update-managers error window)

E: Problem parsing dependency Depends
E: Error occurred while processing btnx (NewVersion1)
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/repoubuntusoftware.info_dists_harty_all_binary-i386_Packages
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

I'm of the impression that the repo is having some issues? Can you verify Thee?

I just verified this. The same happens here. I would simply comment it out for now in the sources.list.
We will post a stick or an update in the 'News and Events' forum when this gets taken care of. I know that Theemahn had to switch servers and has a whole new setup now for hosting.
Once again, comment it out and do a 'sudo apt-get update' again.

You could just try sudo apt-get upgrade. It worked for me. Took a while, but it worked.

The "Upgrade" Icon

Postby powwowtime » Tue Oct 14, 2008 5:20 pm

Does the "Upgrade" icon that appears on the default Gnome desktop in UE1l.9 do anything special that just launching Synaptic or Ultamatix doesn't do? I clicked it and was told "It is suggested to re-run the script, the repo may be under a heavy load. If the message persists, please verify you have an internet connection, the repo is online & try again. Please refer to UbuntuSoftware Forum for further info." So if there's not a carrot at the other end I might just archive it.
