Cannot play DVDs

Help & support for Ultimate Edition 1.9

Cannot play DVDs

Postby powwowtime » Sun Oct 12, 2008 4:16 am

Ultimate Edition 1.9 for AMD64/x86_64 .... This is on my desktop system (specs in sig line below). Cannot play the movie and Nautilus cannot view DVD's contents, just pops up showing that a DVD containing 0 files is in the drive. I made sure w64codecs, libdvdcss2, libdvdread3 and libdvdnav4 (latest versions from Medibuntu repositories) are installed. I have installed, removed and reinstalled, and tried out Movie Player with Gstreamer and Xine engines, Kaffiene, Codeine, Gxine and Mplayer "ultimate movie player" all to no avail. I tried playing the DVD (and other DVD movies) in either drive and I tried it in the internal drive while the USB DVDR-RW/CDR-RW was unplugged. Same results -- Nautilus pops up showing that a DVD containing 0 files is in the drive, and none of the players can read it. (The system can boot with a Live CD/DVD in either drive, and read contents of data CD's, music CD's and data DVD's in either drive while a live session is running from the other drive or during a session run from the hard drive install.) The movies can play under WinXP, and if I boot using the UE1.9 Live DVD in one DVD drive, I can then play the commercial/encrypted DVD movies just fine in the other. I suspect there are options that are default during a live session that do not install by default on a fresh install-to-hard-drive, other than the libraries/codecs mentioned above, perhaps ....

Any ideas what else I may be overlooking?

or have you tried using vlc, gnomeplayer? i had a similar issue and using vlc cured all my ailments. i agree with some other posts that you have tio install the restricted drivers as it does do a lot for watching dvds etc. ;)

Thanks for all your responses! I forgot the restricted drivers. All works fine now, with some minor glitches. Xine plays smoothly but Kaffeine using Xine as its engine plays jittery, and I can't find a way to "undo" Kaffeine as my default player. Perhaps there is an adjustment within Kaffeine that optimizes the way it uses Xine?

No complaints about the Celeron 3.2, it came with the case. ;)

Hey, I installed VLC media player. Wow, what a difference, and it's not "choppy" or "jittery" like Kaffeine and Gxine were (*on my system with available drivers). And I got to experiment with a whole menu of deinterlacing mechanisms and other tweaks -- now that's control and I like it. The only thing still buggin' me just a little is, when I stick in a DVD it pops up File Manager (in Gnome) rather than presenting a list of handler candidates (like in KDE). I might try tweaking my file manager or even try out a few others (not a deal breaker by any means but I do really prefer Gnome)...
