MythTV setup help?

Thanks!! I do not get discouraged easily. Let me pick your brain regarding MythTV since you were just setting it up.

When I run Backend Setup, it finishes with Cannot login to Database. I followed the instructions on the MythTV page and did not set a password for the DB.

Here are the contents of the mythsql.txt file. It still will not

Whether or not I run the Frontend or Backend Setup, it still refuses to allow me to Login to the DB. I am not using a password, per the instructions.

I'm in windows right now. You can go into mysql which is the data base that myth uses. There is a gui for mysql in synaptic that will allow you to set a password then add that password into the myth backend. Tomorrow I'll post properly with a better explanation.

I believe this package will allow you to contol mysql(set up passwords etc.).
mysql-gui-tools(install with Synaptic Package Manager)

I installed the SQL Gui, but I have no idea how to run the SQL Gui. It does not appear in the System Menu or the Applications menu.

Remember, I am new to Linux so, for a while, I need explicit instructions on how to run commands and find controls that I need to use.

Okay, mysql is a whole other setup. im not trying to diss ya, but lets stick to the original thread problem.

1. Those codecs that you need can be downloaded through Ultimate Edition Script (Ultamatix) Deb package that TheeMahn made.

2.If you're running ubuntu, the easiest way to get this working (and make sure you have some essentials) is to run a few commands.

(if you're running gusty, just change hardy to gutsy it in the first command)

O.K. Time for a few Linux basics!!
Most of your binaries(similar to windows exe) are in file system usr bin(for binary) directory.
Most of your librarys(similar to windows dlls) are in file system usr lib(for library) directory.
Sometimes packages do not add themselves to your start menu so you have to start them yourself.
By holding down alt and pressing f2 you will get a box where you can run a command if you don't feel comfortable accessing you binaries or editing you conf(configure) files to make programs do what you want them to do. I like to go straight to the source of the problem which is usually a conf file that has to be either created ot modified. The big advantage of Linux is you have easy access to all the files to either fix your problem or make it worse. It is best to log in as root to do editing of core files. It will save you from chown(change ownership of files and constantly typing sudo and your password). This is where the learning curve steepens. I have been using Linux since Februrary of this year and it has been quite an adventure!!

OK!! That makes sense!! So how do I login as Root and how do I proceed next to resolve this problem and get MythTV to work with Ultimate 1.9?

Sorry, you will also have to install mysql-admin. This will give you the gui to set up mysql.

Logging in as root eh. I'm sure I will get shot for telling you this BuuuuuuuuT!!
Here is how:

Be prepared to re-install when you hose your system. I have done it many times!!
Just make sure when you fix your problems log back in as yourself. It is much more secure!!
Once you get that going you should be well on your way.
More tomorrow back to Windows for some downloading fun!!!
