<BREW> It looked great And I thought I would like to give it a go

Hello all by the way

I have downloaded both versions and I tried installing it within Windoze on my 64 bit Vista machine yesterday, but it would not boot, so today I would like to try it on my 86 XP machine

I noticed yesterday that selecting the option to install and dual boot in Windows it stated that I was installing Ubuntu 8.10 and it downloaded tons of files, I was worried that this was not in fact the Ultimate edition is this correct?

So what's the procedure to install Ultimate within XP? I don't want to wipe the Raid0 Windoze install

Sorry for the newbie questions, but we have to start somewhere

:( Thanks for reply Angel. Don't think partitioning the drive is an option as it's a Raid0 and the windoze is spread over two drives

Ok I'll give the install within windoze a crack and we'll see what happens, after all it's got over 300gb of free space

Hello and welcome to Ultimate Edition..you can install Ultimate 1.8 or 1.9 in Windows using Wubi...a word of caution before doing so..defrag your hard drive first..so it will give you "clean room" for the file..for it will be as large as you donate the space to be..Hardy is 8.4 in Ubuntu..you might want to check out that forum for a heads up on installing it that way... ;) After a short while using Ultimate Edition..it will not take you no time to clear room for a regular install..if time permits will be back with a link... ;)

:? Ok, I've tried installing within windows(sorry cowboy your post about defragging appeared after install)

It won't boot, I get

Loading, Please Wait

BusyBox v1.10.2 etc etc
Enter help for list of commands

(initramfs)

It also won't boot with the other options hitting the Esc key

I do have another PC that I could wipe and install, that might be my best option

:D LOL Nick, your too late 'n' all

Bye bye Genuine Vista Ultimate :o

It's now installing with a format on the other pc I mentioned, the fun can now begin........................

Hit the upgrade icon on the desktop now, I like to press buttons even if I don't know what they do, the music isn't too bad tbh

Seems to work fine with the direct lan, which I was a bit worried about

@Nick

I've had another crack at the install inside Windoze :?

In the second line I do not have "quiet splash" tho I still tried adding the "all_generic_ide" command at the end of the line, but to no avail

What I have is this, maybe to do with the Raid0

kernel / ubuntu/install/boot/vmlinuz debian-installer/custom-installation=/-}
initrd /ubuntu/install/boot/initrd.gz/

The -} is supposed to show a right pointing arrow lol

So where to from here?

I tried wubi and it bonked my Windows install. It was probably my fault since it was a long time ago. It just made me nervous about trying it again. Embedded operating systems are a bit of an adventure from what I've read. They are a great idea in theory but I don't know how practical they are at this point in time. You might be able to resize your raid setup so you can dual boot Windows and Ultimate. There are a lot of good people on this forum who can walk you through it I'm sure. Just make sure you back up all your stuff before you try anything.
