Totem will not play DVD's

Postby buschbarber » Sun Sep 21, 2008 12:16 am

I am running 1.9 and my Totem Movie Player loads, but will not play a DVD. VLC works fine. I uninstalled and reinstalled Totem, in Synaptic, but it will still not play a DVD. It worked fine a couple of days ago.

I received an error message indicating a later version was already installed. I believe I had to install this in order to play Commercial Copy Protected DVD's. Totem worked after that install, but stopped working several days later. My son also has the same version of the OS that I do and I installed the same version of CSS2 on his machine. Totem is still working there.

Open Synaptic, search for and install: ubuntu-restricted-extras

Or get hard-core and use apt-get:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

See if that gets you over the hump.
I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of how awesome I am...

What you are looking for is libdvdcss2. This is the library to play encrypted dvds. You can download it from videolan or debian or install it with Synaptic. You don't need to install other crap.

When I installed Mplayer, by the method you linked me to, I received the following errors

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
mplayer: Depends: libdirectfb-0.9-25 but it is not installable
E: Broken packages

The only other thing I can suggest is to install totem xine with all the xine extras and remove totem gstreamer. This has fixed video issues for me before(like playing .mov files properly). Hope this works.

After I installed Totem Xine and Totem Extras, the movie did not play, but when I removed Totem Gstreamer, It played just like VLC.
