Java problems with Firefox. gcj plugin did not work well...

Postby brjoon1021 » Wed Sep 17, 2008 10:02 pm

... now what. I need Java to work and soon. I have 1.9 64-bit fully updated and I ran the update script. I think that I just want the Sun Java FF plugin and no other sh*t in there. I don't know what to remove or where to find what I need to install. I "completely uninstalled" the gcj plugin, but I still don't have Java working...

Enable the Multiverse and Universe repositories if you haven't already by clicking on System/Administration/Software Sources.

Open a Terminal and type the following to install JDK and JRE

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install sun-java6-bin sun-java6-jre sun-java6-jdk

Just copy and paste it or use Synaptic to search for the packages and install them that way.

Then go to Java Tester to confirm.
I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of how awesome I am...

If it's not broken, you haven't tweaked it enough.

Thanks for you help. It still does not work, though. I had already enabled those repos. I used the terminal, and ran the command. They were installed perfectly. I fail the Java check. In fact that page has the symbol for "download the plugin" and it only offers me the crappy gjc option that I uninstalled.

bump.

Still broken.

1. How do I remove EVERYTHING that could be screwing this up and then reinstall only what I need ? I originally had the netx and gjc stuff installed (the default from the installation, which did not work). I uninstalled those. I then ran the commands I was told to run which installed the Sun Java stuff. It still did not work. I then installed the gjc again out of desparation. It does not work.

I absolutely need to be able to upload data to my work server via a Java window that opens for me to tell it what to upload. I can't do it now and I could not do it from the plain installation either. I love the idea of open source and ditching Sun, Flash, and MS, but putting gnash and these bad Java surrogates in place is a little premature, I think. I had to uninstall gnash to watch youtube and I am still screwed for Java...

Open up Synaptic and search for java.
Yes this generates a large list but will give you an idea of what you have installed related to java.

Just a thought:
Have you installed Ubuntu restricted extras?
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

or install from synaptic.
this solved a host of issues for me.

I already had that installed. Thanks for trying to help me. I posted at the ubuntu forum as well and got this response:

"you can't use sun-java for firefox 64-bits, no sun-java plugin is provided. What you can use is open java and the icedtea plugin for firefox. open synaptic, scroll down to icedtea, mark for install and click the apply button, the rest of java dependencies will get installed along too."

???????????

Is this correct ?
