Ultimate 1.9 Freezes on Boot

Help & support for Ultimate Edition 1.9

Ultimate 1.9 Freezes on Boot

Postby buschbarber » Sat Sep 06, 2008 10:05 pm

I recently installed 1.9 on a 2Ghz Celeron machine with 768Mb of ram, without incident. It is still running fine but I gave it to my son.

My primary machine has been a 3Ghz P4 with 2Gb ram, a Realtek Integrated Sound Adapter, Nvidia Gforce 6200OC video card, three 200Gb SATA hard drives and a Plextor 716A DVD Writer. I was running XP MCE and I want to dual boot with Ultimate 1.9, as I did with the other machine.

When ever I boot with the LiveCD and choose Run/Install, I get the bar moving back and forth, for several minutes, and then it freezes. The checksum for the DVD matched the one on the web site. I downloaded and burned the ISO file several times, at 4x, with both my Plextor 716A DVD Writer and an LG DVD Writer using both Nero8 Burning Rom and InfraRecorder. Same result.

After a few minutes of the Freeze, I get a Black screen with White text

Preparing Restricted Drivers
Setting System Clock
Starting Basic Networking
Starting Kernel Event Manager
Loading Hardware Drivers

then I receive6 or 7 lines of text with a path ending with "Abnormal Exit"

Any idea how to debug this problem and get 1.9 installed?

Are you trying to INSTALL using that Plextor 716A? Because I can tell you MY P-716A gave me absolute FITS (think: beating your head against a wall) with both Ultimate 1.9 and plain-vanilla Hardy Heron (Ubuntu v8.04) and I'll bet you dollars to donuts that's the issue here if it's the drive you're trying to install with. My beloved "sexy plexy" is now sitting on a shelf and a $30 Sony replacement DVD-RW has been installed and is working like a champ. Go figure! I can't tell you WHY the Plexy is an issue, but it is. You could, I suppose, try the 80-wire/40-pin connector, but even that didn't pull my Plextor back in-line with this version of Ubuntu or Ultimate. It might work for you though. And it's a cheap fix if it does work!
I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of how awesome I am...

If it's not broken, you haven't tweaked it enough.

The Plextor 716a is what I have been booting from most of the time. A fellow IT friend, who uses Ubuntu, suggested I try booting from my Samsung SD-608 DVD-ROM drive which is my second DVD drive. I tried that once and it still froze. I then bought an external LG GSA-E60L DVD writer, burned some Ultimate 1.9 and Ubuntu 8.04.1LTS Desktop DVD's. I booted once from the LG and it froze.

I have been using Ubuntu for about 6 months, on the 2Ghz Celeron that I gave my son. I upgraded to Ultimate and it was working great. At one point, I burned a copy of Ubuntu Studio, but I never installed it. In my attempt to get Ubuntu to install on this 3Ghz P4, I booted with the Ubuntu Studio and picked Install off the menu. I was able to pick the drive that I wanted to install on and partition the entire drive. It installed the OS and all the software I told it to install. When it came time to boot Ubuntu, off the HD, the Grub Loader came up and I chose Ubuntu, and it started to load. As part of the load process, it fills in the letters in the words Ubuntu Studio, with white. As it filled in the letters, from left to right, it started to slow down and finally froze while filling in the d in Studio.

Any ideas on what to do next

Have you tried removing "quiet splash" from booting yet...
Any usb besides the mouse and keyboard connected...like printer or wireless..or even another USB Optical drive...? If so unplug the non essentials...even a Floppy Drive will hang it up if there is not a formatted disc in it.. :|

I am not sure what Quiet Splash is. How do I remove it?

One time I tried removing all USB connections, but I may have still tried to boot from my Plextor 716a drive. Someone said not to boot from that drive so I will try to boot from the Samsung DVD-Rom drive.

Boot from the LiveCD.
At the splash-screen, hit F6.
Scroll out to the end of the line of text that starts with "kernel" using your arrow key.
You'll see two options near the end of that line: quiet splash
Delete both of those words using the backspace key.
Press enter and continue booting.

You'll see a lot of text roll by. If you still hang up and can't boot fully, make note of the last few things onscreen and post them here. This will give us an idea of what was going on, or IS going on, that's preventing your system from booting fully.

Thanks!! I will try that a little later. Now that I only have one PC, I have to reboot into Windows to check my mail. I will try to acquire another PC or build one so I can dedicate this one to Linux.
I will keep you updated on the Boot problem.

By the way, when I Login to this site, I make the choice to Login Automatically, but everytime I connect, it fills in my Username and Password but I have to recheck the Login Automatically box and then hit Login. Is there a way to configure it to Login Automatically as soon as the page opens?

OK!! Here is the bottom line:
I booted with 8.04.1LTS and Checked the Integrity of the CD. It was fine.
I chose to run from the LiveCD, hit F6, and got rid of the Quiet Splash
The last lines before the PC hung were as follows:
/etc/initd/rc:317:sed:not found (this repeated 22 times)
init:uanble to execute "/bin/sh" for rc-default:no such file or directory
init:rc-default main process (8528) terminated with status 255

I rebooted the same CD and this time chose Install:

init: rcs main process (6949) killed by SEGV signal
Init: unable to execute "/bin/sh" for rc-default:no such file or directory
init:rc-default main process (8425) terminated with status 255

I then booted with Ultimate 1.97 DVD:

init:rcs main process (6913) killed by SEGV signal
init:unable to execute "/bin/sh" for rc-default:no such file or directory
init:rc-default main process (8308) terminated with status 255
