I couldn't see an option in the BIOS to boot from USB. I'll have another look though, certainly!

What I meant was download Super Grub and then put it into a USB..then if your Bios allows boot from the USB...maybe a shot...
Edit...Since your running the live DVD..use Partition Editor..give us a screenshot on what your partitions look like..... :|

I can change the boot options in BIOS to boot from the USB stick, but it won't do it :(

As for partition table, it seems screwy.

testdisk in Ubuntu liveCD shows the table correctly, but GParted is showing the windows installation partition as 50GB when it's actually 30GB. When I tried to reinstall Windows, I noticed that the Windows installer CD also thinks that the first partition is 50GB.

sudo fdisk -l reveals:
Disk /dev/sda: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Well..I can see by your list of your partitions..you need another HD to work with..
Since most knowledgable people back-up there data and files before installing or reinstalling a OS on there system..just start over using your live DVD create your windows partition and leave the rest blank for your Linux or what ever..aw hell while your at it just make the whole disk a Windows install and do a check disc to see if you have any bad sectors which will bork a install...also note that with alot of partitions..."Grub" has been known to fail or mess up a installation...this is not a Ultimate Edition problem but a "Grub" problem and it is documented..as a bug... :|

believe me, I was starting to reach this conclusion myself!

I am now able to boot into Vista, but my NTFS shared partition is crazy. However, Windows, and my ext3 /home (where my Ubuntu and Windows documents are stored) seems to have come out unscathed.

Using testdisk in the Ubuntu live CD:

Disk /dev/sda - 500 GB / 465 GiB - CHS 60801 255 63
Partition Start End Size in sectors
D HPFS - NTFS 0 1 1 3915 254 63 62910477 [Windows OS]
D HPFS - NTFS 0 1 13 3915 254 63 62910465
D HPFS - NTFS 2610 1 13 6525 254 63 62910465
D HPFS - NTFS 3915 254 51 7831 254 63 62910553
D HPFS - NTFS 3915 254 63 7831 254 63 62910541
D HPFS - NTFS 3916 0 1 33940 254 63 482351625
D Linux 3916 0 1 36550 254 63 524281275
D HPFS - NTFS 3916 0 9 33940 254 63 482351617
D HPFS - NTFS 6526 0 1 36550 254 63 482351625 [Media&Games]
D Linux 33941 1 1 55839 254 63 351807372 [Shared Data]

D Linux 57145 1 1 59103 254 63 31471272

I've no idea what that means, but it's total crap!

Here's how it ought to look:

Disk /dev/sda - 500 GB / 465 GiB - CHS 60801 255 63
Current partition structure:
Partition Start End Size in sectors

1 * HPFS - NTFS 0 1 1 3915 254 63 62910477 [Windows OS]
2 P HPFS - NTFS 3916 0 1 33940 254 63 482351625

4 P Linux Swap 60409 0 1 60800 254 63 6297480

Let me reiterate, "just start clean" forget all the other bullsh.. other partitions and stick with the two OS you want to play with...real simple...You can only use one at a time... ;)
Edit....Do yourself a favor and pick up another HD to play with more..keep in mind when doing that it is recommended by myself when you install on that disconnect the other and change your boot option in the Bios to further eliminate future borks to the other installs...take that from an old man... ;)

Thanks for the advice Cowboy. I will do so in the future, but as the bank balance is currently the major prohibiting factor in both my 3D and digital worlds, I need a short-term solution to fix what I have at the moment.
