Ultimate 1.9 Freezes on Boot

Help & support for Ultimate Edition 1.9

OK!! I tried adding the acpi=off, but no change.

I removed the Nvidia Gforce6200 OC card and connected the monitor to the Integraged Intell 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset. I was able to Boot from any of my Ubuntu CD's or DVD's and Install Ultimate 1.97 on one of my hard drives. I rebooted and installed all the 300 updates that I was presented with. I rebooted again and then Shut Down. I put the Nvidia Gforce 6200 OC PCI video card back in the PC, connected the monitor to it, and then rebooted.

The Boot hung and I wrote down the last few lines of text displayed:

Segmentation fault
Segmentation fault
[: 63: Illegal number:
init: rc-default main process (4587) killed by SEGV signal

How can I resolve this conflict and get Ubuntu to boot with the much better video card? Remember, I am Dual Booting with XP MCE and I need the better video for both OS's

I could be wrong here (ya ya ya - go ahead and rub it in here guys .. lol), but you might try to boot your machine in recovery mode (hold down the esc key after BIOS post) and then when it stops loading hit CNTRL+D to continue with maintenance. Enter the following:
Code: Select all
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

Hopefully this will run you through a generic configuration utility that will ask you various questions about your keyboard and monitor. With any luck, this will automatically reset your video drivers for you as well and load something that will get you into your desktop. While in this configuration utility, you will need to only use your TAB, Space Bar, Enter and possible the arrow keys to navigate.
Good Luck!

Daddy, I believe you are right. That is what I had to do when I upgraded graphics cards once. I don't understand why an Nvidia 6200 would be causing the problems though. I used to have one of those installed on an older machine.

On my PC, the first thing I see upon Power Up, is the Video card description. Next, is a blue screen where I can hit F1 for Setup or Esc for the Boot Menu. If I hit Esc after Post, it eventually brings up the Boot Menu. If I pick a drive to Boot from and hit Enter, the Grub Loader brings up the menu to launch an OS. If I choose Ubuntu, and hold Esc, it just makes noise and tries to load Ubuntu.

I cannot get it to a point where I can use Control D to get into a Maintainence mode where I can type commands.

I'm getting a little lost here, but instead of holding down the Escape key after finishing POST, just wait for the Boot Menu, THEN press Escape (you don't have to hammer it). Choose Recovery Mode.

Further, have you tried using
Code: Select all
sudo envy -t
to install the nVidia driver via Envy?

And doesn't Ctrl+D = Logout?
I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of how awesome I am...

If it's not broken, you haven't tweaked it enough.

On my PC, when you fist Power Up, a Black screen with White letters displays the the name of the Video card and how much memory it has. Next, a screen with a Green backround comes up, with an HP logo, telling you to hit Esc, for the Boot menu, F1 for Setup (BIOS).

If I hit Esc there, a list of my three Hard Drives and two DVD drives appears allowing me to choose which Drive to Boot from.
If I hit F1, instead of Esc, the BIOS Setup menu appears
If I do not hit anything, the screen goes Black and the Grub loader starts up and displays a list allowing me to choose Ubuntu, Ubuntu (Recovery), Ubuntu memtest, XP Media Center Edition, other OS.
If I choose Ubuntu, the Ultimate Splash Screen appears for a while and then some scrolling Text and then it hangs
If I choose Ubuntu (Recovery mode), I get No Splash Screen, a lot of Text scrolling by, and then it hangs again
If I choose XP MCE, Windows loads OK

If I try to hit Esc when I see the words Grub loader starting, I just get a Sticky Key noise
If I try to hit Esc after the list of OS's appears, it does nothing
If I try to hit Esc after I choose Ubuntu, from the list of OS's, it does nothing
If I try to lhit Esc after I choose Ubuntu (Recovery Mode), it displays [~ in between the scrolling text

It does not appear that hitting the Escape key does anything except on the Green Screen with the HP logo, where it brings up a rectangular box with a list of Hard Drives and DVD drives.

I never reach a point where I can type in any command. If I wait until the Scrolling text stops and the Boot seems to hang, I can type in text, but when I hit Enter, nothing happens.

When you say Hit Excape at the Boot Menu, are you referring to the menu that appears, after I see the words Grub loading, that contains the list of OS's to boot from. I do not believe hitting Escape there did anything, as well.

You are correct, hitting esc key within the GRUB menu will do nothing for you. You have to select the (recovery mode) option by scrolling down to it via down arrow key and then 'press' ENTER to boot from that option.

I've read that you are not able to get to a spot where it asks you for your password or to hit CNTRL+D to continue (or what ever it says .... cant remember exactly). To me it sounds like you either have a bad install or used a bad disc for the install. I would recommend re-burning your .iso file with Ultimate Edition on it @ 2X or the lowest speed you can burn at and then try again. You should not be having this many problems.

What are the last couple things that you read during your attempt to boot using '(recovery mode)'?
Can you post them here? Not that I would be able to make heads or tails from them, but something might come up.

Re: Ultimate 1.9 Freezes on Boot

I came up with an interesting idea. As I looked through the BIOS, I noticed that I could choose the Default Video to be PCI or Onboard. Since I happen to have two monitors, I hooked one to the Nvidia card and one to the Intel Integrated video connector and I chose Onboard video as the Default. The PC booted up and the Grub menu loaded. I booted Ultimate normally. I ran the Update manager and loaded the lates updates. A message came up indicating that there were Restricted Drivers available for the Nvidia card, so even though I was not getting any video from the Nvidia card (because of the BIOS setting), Ubuntu still detected that the Nvidia card was there, but it did not hang the system because the Onboard video was the Default.

I loaded the Nvidia drivers and then rebooted. Ubuntu came up with unreadable graphics, so I powered down, switched the BIOS to the PCI video and rebooted. Ubuntu Splash screen came up and then scrolling text until it reached a point where I was getting the same block of text, refreshing every 10 sec or so
