.avi is just a container not an actual format. You can try totem.
Install Totem xine, Ubuntu retricted extras and any other Xine extras available.
Remove Totem gstreamer
Depending on what the .avi file is(MP4 Divx or whatever) the codec will be available somewhere unless the file is damaged(corrupt) or is encoded with a very rare codec.
You may be able to transcode it using this to a format that will play:

I'm very imbarassed, I've never actually used only Ultimatix to achieve my media goodness. I've always taken a longer more complex route to install the codecs, and have to search for it every install. However, I do believe Ultimatix will do as Automatix did in the past and then quite a bit more. I used to use Automatix when I was new to linux and had great success with it. For simplicity factor, I must run with a vote for TheeMahns hard work on Ultimatix though. It will install your codecs to play most of your .avi files with no problems. This all hinges on if your from outside the US though, considering the laws around here ;)

I could just send them over to Newbies corner, and have them go through the following:
Code: Select all
sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/hardy.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list
wget -q http://packages.medibuntu.org/medibuntu-key.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add - && sudo apt-get update

Then do a
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install non-free-codecs

But, I would still say that Ultimatix is a little simpler, JMHO. If one just wants to watch some movies that have already been encoded in .avi or divx or xvid then this should do just fine. However, as pch.shot has said, sometimes it is not that simple if you would like to do more complicated things than this.
