So the powernowd suggestion seemed to be working for a couple of hours. I was doing so pretty cpu intensive work and my system didn't crash, even after loading compiz and turning my effects back on. But then I made the mistake of turning my desktop cube. Crash. Also still crashing on bootup if its plugged in.

Yeah, Like I said if this keeps up I think I will go ahead and switch to 1.8. Any suggestions on the backup software.

Have a look at QuickStart and see if that might fit your needs, or check out what Leadfingers wrote about Remastersys in the newbie section

I would have liked to have seen your dmesg output during lockup and if the keyboard is unresponsive when it did lock, a archive attachment to this board of your logs /var/log/(in a terminal)...
Code: Select all
cd /var/log/
sudo tar -cf ~/logs.tar kern.log syslog faillog debug dpkg.log user.log Xorg.0.log dmesg/

By reading your logs, I could have told you exactly what was wrong (almost certain). I am always a day late and a dollar short ;)

The above statement will take your logs folder archive it to a tar file called logs.tar located in your home folder, if attached I can download it extract it and scour it looking for where your problem resided.

Sorry as always do not have that kind of time to do so for everyone,

Hey TheeMahn,

I actually haven't switched to 1.8 yet, so I will get the log and post it next time my system freezes. My keyboard is unresponsive during the lock, so I'll send my archive log.

Thanks,

Just a thought:
Have you gone into your Startup-Manager and Bootup-Manager and disabled the Laptop related power daemons?
That's the first thing I do, particularly important with some laptop's bios, as they tend to fight each other for control.

I don't mean to be the bringer of bad news, but constant crashes are often not operating system related they are hardware issues. Try downloading another live cd distro and see if the same thing happens.

so I haven't had a chance to try the alternate distro thing, but the problem is clearly video related. I tried watching an avi earlier today and the computer immediately froze. Just wanted to update you all.
