how to tell 32bit or 64bit? [SOLVED]

Postby scottsark » Tue May 06, 2008 6:38 pm

I have a pentium 4 530 3Ghz processor and a intel 915g chipset and i can figure out if it is 32 bit or 64 bit. It seems that some pentium 4s have EM64T (extended memory 64 technology) and some don't. For some reason I can't find definitive info if the 530 has it. Is there some test or app that I can run to tell me if I can install the x64UU? Sorry for such a nooob question but I cant find the answer anywhere.

This community is awesome. Thanks in advance.

Howdy Scott, take a look here & see if this matches up to your CPU...quickest thing I could find. Indications as I understand it is that it's 32bit.

(edit 1) there is a 531 thats 3.0ghz also has HT and the same applies to it as well
(edit 2) There own site conflicts itself on model number and speeds but everywhere I look if its in those series of processors it say you should be ok assuming your motherboard etc.. are up to it.
heres a link if you'd like to look yourself. http://compare.intel.com/PCC/default.as ... ture=en-US

What I get from the INTEL site is yes you should be ok. I looked up the 530 chip and it does not show it to be a 3.0ghz tho Are you sure on your model number?

cab, thanks for the quick reply. I am pretty positive of the model #. I took it from the spec page of my sony vaio pcv-rs720g. I was also on the intel site before I posted and couldn't make heads or tails of seemly contradictory info. It is a 3.0ghz pentium 4 processor 530 with HT 1mb L2 cache 800mhz front side bus with an intel 915g chipset. I don't know why its so hard to figure this out. Thanks for the help. You guys are bitchin!

IMHO, that's one of the biggest probs with intel...so many variations on 1 model number it gets confusing...I was guessing at which one to pick of the 530's and just tried to match it to your chipset...that's how I settled on the link I provided...thought that might give you a lead in the right direction but to many forks in the road I reckon...hope you get something final on it Scott..thanx for the other links Cab...will add them to my notes for future ref...

By the time you get done with all your research you could have downloaded & burned 1.8 x64.
If it loads, you have 64bit, If you have 32bit it will spit-up on your shirt rather than load the live DVD.

something else you can try. of course have to be using windows. is cpu-z

http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

its free.

just d/l & extract all 3 files. and load it up. you dont even have to install. look under instruction set on the first page. ive attached a screen shot i took from my windows box to show you what it looks like. it should say x86-64 but in your case if you support x64 it may say em64t.

im not sure. but if you dont see either then its safe to assume it doesnt support x64.

Thanks for the help fellas but i think leadfingers is right. I don't have windows at all because I jumped into linux with both feet so i would learn a little faster. Its weird to me that it is so hard to find out what kind of processor I have. I thought there might be a linux equivalent of the windows apps mentioned above but so be it. Looks like I just have to try and run the live dvd and see if it works. Wish me luck. Thanks again for the input.
