Help & support for Ultimate Edition 1.8

1.8...can't download anything from repos...

Postby Moonfrost » Tue May 06, 2008 4:02 pm

I was trying to download some programs to use with 1.8 using sypnaptic but it won't connect to repos at all. I tried downloading lots of different things but it still says "download speed: unknown" and it never downloads anything, I cancel and it gives me the following error (using the example of Xchat):

Code: Select all
W: Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/x/xchat/xchat-common_2.8.4-0ubuntu7_all.deb

Code: Select all
W: Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/x/xchat/xchat_2.8.4-0ubuntu7_amd64.deb

EDIT: Ok, things seems to be working now but it takes like 5-10 seconds to start download (either Sypnaptic or update manager) and then it downloads at almost dial-up speed (I have cable)...I tried everything else like downloading from browser, surfing the web and so on and it's not my connection at all...I used to get speeds of 600 kb/s+ from the repos and update manager on 1.6 and 1.7...

TheeMahns answer is as follows:
I will let everyone know... Ultimate Edition 1.8 does not include the "ultimate repo", this was indeed an error on my end and the loss of my 500 err 800GB of info, I had to rip Ultimate Edition 1.8 x64 from a disk just to release it.

How to add the Ultimate Edition 1.8 repo (this will also work with the 32 bit edition when released - hopefully will be unnecessary):
Code: Select all
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

add to the bottom:
deb http://repoubuntusoftware.info/ harty all #Ultimate repo

TheeMahn wrote:I do not suggest using the eyecandy repo in Ultimate Edition 1.8 x64, until I can iron out the problems with compiz / emerald, I left that one out on purpose believe that. You can also remove automatix from your repo list since hardy is not supported with automatix. I have thought about picking up automatix and re-writing it...

TheeMahn

hope that helps

while mrpc is right the Ultimate Edition repo has been left out.

you are using the default mirrors and honestly they are extremely slow. i suggest choosing a different mirror.

this is what i would suggest doing. open software sources

system-->admin-->software sources

after you open this. you will see a section that says mirror. it will be towards the bottom of the first page. click that the click other.

a new screen will appear. on the uper right side you will see "choose best mirror" click that.

it will then run some tests and try to choose the best mirror for you. now you may not get the fastest mirror doing it this way but it will be close. i assure you it will be much better than the speeds you get now.

after the test are done click ok. then ok again. when asked to reload sources choose yes. then wait for it to finish.

then i sugest following mrpc instructions so you can get the Ultimate Edition repo as well.

let me know if this helps. if not ill share my mirror/sources list with you.

I guess this explains why it took me all day to download a few updates. I'm going to try changing my mirrors as you suggest. Hopefully, that will do the trick.

Thanks for that Drama <BREW> <BREW> <BREW>
