All I can say is that Drives can be very very buggy. I ran into a problem last night with my drive. Burnt a copy of Ultimate Edition 1.8 64bit a couple months ago and have installed it just fine using the drive I burnt it on. Literally, last night at about 11:00PM I tried to install that very disk again .... guess what????
Yep, no go- drive took a dump. I'm just seeing if there is any possible way to cancel out any possibility of a bad drive by swapping it out. I know, deductive reasoning - right? Well, optical drives are like no other ... It can burn correctly and not read correctly at the same time, this has personally happened to me as well. I've also had a computer damn near burn up on me due to a faulty drive :o

-anyway, you can take it or leave it, just trying to through out some other options here for ya.

OK here may be an issue to investigate.

Vista uses NTFS:

USB drives are notorious for running under the FAT 32 format:

so it may be an issue of lost in translation.

If you can reformat the usb drive under ntfs it may be able to transport the ISO better Idunno.

and I think you have the slot loading drive

(reburn the DVD under xp if you can Vista also has some iffyburning issues. Sometimes they translate over to ubuntu side sometimes not. So if you can reburn under xp try that)

I guess we need a global warning then. Don't use Windows Media Player(it is such crap anyway who would want to). When I'm in Windows I use Media Player Classic with the K lite mega codec pack and it will play just about anything. I just thought that everybody had stopped using WMP years ago.

I've just installed the new VLC on my Windows partition. It looks nice so far. Looks like a vast improvement.
