You can log in as root(however, be careful and take your time).
This is how you do it:
Start menu:
Adminstration
Login Window
Security
check allow local system adminstrator login
next:
Start menu
Adminstration
Users and groups
click on root and unlock using your password
properties for root account
set password by hand
click ok
Now you can log in as root and do whatever you want.
Just make sure you log out when you are done and log back in as yourself when you are done tinkering. Only insane people like myself stay logged in as root for long periods of time(security issues and all that).
Hope you everything up and running shortly.
It should all look like this;

Just a silly question, I know pch. will watch this thread: when you say the keyboard will not work...do you mean when you type your password, or it just quits functioning completely? Have you hit enter after typing your password, even though nothing seems to be working?

i did hit enter, and waited a while but nothing seemed to happen. the usb wireless is a cdu-680 by franklin and i was able to log in as root but could not get it working. somthing about broken segamentation came up.
a funny thing about this laptop (a lot of things really)is it will load just a few good distros, mandriva and ubunto being two,back-track being the third. mandriva will work with wireless(internal card) which is what i am sending this reply with. but mandrivas clock allways comes up wrong. ubuntos allways works but i cant get online. and backtrack only works live. if i knew this pc was going to be this bad i would have gotten another brand. i ran pclinuxos 2007 at home or anything else i wanted on my desktop.
at least i can get a duel boot :)
