No codecs! Bad dog, no biscuit!!

Try using VLC (Media Player) as your default for .avi files. VLC has played everything I've ever thrown at it without needing all those messy codecs.

maybe i did not make myself clear, the dvd plays on my box but not in my dvd player at home. the player tells me i have an incorrect disk in my drive and spits it out. what i need to do is convert the avi format into a format so i can view it at home on my dvd player.

Well, bear in mind that some set-top DVD players will not recognize "burned" media, period.

Can you play other burned DVD's in this particular player?

That being said... Found this script on the "official" forums regarding this very topic (AVI to MPEG conversion).

these scripts from that post gave me a video-converter-beta thing to click, it works great, converts everything to everything else.
