2 important things to do after downloading, check the Md5sum of the download (to make sure you didn't get a bad download), and burn the disc at x2 or x4 speed (to make sure you don't burn a coaster). for more help with this read http://forumubuntusoftware.info/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=537&sid=8a0f2223761a34d097946e90b5e5fd0f
Many problems can be solved by doing these 2 things, as it makes sure you start out with a good disc.

Once you have a good disc...
At the first boot
Select Safe graphics mode
and let the Live DVD load completely before hitting the Install button.

If it still doesn't want to install, post back here with your system specs.

That is your problem, unless the Md5sum match exactly, you have a bad download and need to download it again.
I suggest using a Download Manager
For Linux, I like Downloader for X (d4x in synaptic)
Read the link from my last post, it explains in more detail.

Did you burn the DVD at x2 or x4 speed? This can mean the difference between a good disc or a coaster.
If you burned at these speeds, it sounds like a driver issue.

Something you might think about...
1.8 x64 (like Hardy Heron x64) has a few driver issues that can make install on some systems difficult to impossible, 1.8 i386 (32bit) resolved several driver issues and will be easier to install.
I know you want the 64bit version but if it won't install you might try the 32bit.
The 64bit driver issues will be fixed sometime in the future (prolly with the next release) but for now the 32 bit is your best option for ease of install.

If you want to keep trying to install the x64 perhaps someone else will have better answers for you.

I don't think you'll have much luck with an upgrade from 1.4 to 1.8. Too many releases apart and TheeMahn hasn't really written a script for it. You could try other means, but I would have to lean towards what LeadFingers is telling you. It sounds like you have a bad DVD burner or a faulty burn. I had this same problem back with 1.5 and it was my drive and nothing else. I swapped out my drive and burned another copy and everything went smoothly. And yes, I would make it anywhere between 15-35% done and then it would just stop on me. Replaced the drive and everything was smooth! I would definately try a different burner. ( Another note: sometimes a burner will actually burn the disc ok but wont read correctly and therefore not install data to the hard-drive correctly.)
