Did you check the MD5sum to verify you have a good DVD?

Are you installing to the whole hard drive, or are you duel booting?

One thing to try...
Load the Live DVD,
Open System/Administration/Partition Editor,
Verify that it sees your drive.
If yes, delete the partition and try the install again.
(this way the installer will see the unallocated disc space and give you the option of installing there)

If still no joy, post back here.

Since the disc is good either you have a hardware issue or a Bios problem.
The bios first.
If you have Virus protection in the Bios, make sure it's disabled.
if your HD is set to Auto change it to Large.
Just a curiosity, is your HD IDE or Sata?
Make sure your DVD drive is set to UDMA. (if Sata don't worry about it)
Make sure there is nothing else preventing you from writing to your HD.
Yes some Laptops have a feature in the bios locking the HD, they say it's for Security.

ps: What format did you burn the ISO to, DVD-R, or DVD-RW?
Some systems have an issue with DVD-RW's.

Hello everyone!
I noticed this thread and the problem is identical to what i experienced as well.I have a Compaq Presario V6000 and had no problems when i installed Ubuntu 8.04,but when i tried installing the 1.8 Ultimate Edition i encountered this problem.I have 1 gb of ram in my laptop so just out of curiosity i entered the bios settup and i noticed that my Bios says i have 512 mb which is not true.
Anyway to make this short i just opened up my ram compartment and noticed that one of the memory sticks was not inserted properly and thats why it did not show in the bios.Once i fixed that my laptop was able to boot in to the live dvd and everything seems ok so my point here is that this problem is definitely Ram related.
To the original poster ...try to install some more ram and it will work.
