No, I'm having issues with video. When playing games like open arena, enemy territory, etc. I get these black burps (sorry no other explainantion comes to mind) on the screen. This makes the game play choppy. I pretty much can't play them.

one of the posters asked if Compiz was on, as that could cause an issue. At first I had no idea what compiz was. I do now, and it is off.

p.s. the ctrl+alt+f2 took me to a terminal like mode. I had to reboot as I don't know the command to get back to my desktop. Thank God firefox was able to restore my session and the above reply was still there. Next time please warm me about that kind of thing. Remember, I'm a NOOB to linux

Just out of curiousity, as I have re-read your posts, and I don't believe I saw it ...What ATI card are you running and what are the specs? And another question (that I don't have a clue on the answer), isn't the Dell 24" a dual DVI hookup? Maybe something in Xorg. needs some tweaking? I'm just throwing out ideas here.

ATI Technologies Inc RV380 [Radeon X600 (PCIE)] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
Subsystem: ATI Technologies Inc Unknown device 0602

deate:

Please excuse my noobness, what's Xorg? Thanks for the input!!!

ive nvr seen this b4 but maybe i can help out a little bit. can you do the following.

open up a terminal window then run the following code

Code: Select all
gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

this will open a new window that looks similar to a notepad. copy and paste here all the text that is in the file please.

also run the following 2 codes from a terminal and paste there outputs.

Code: Select all
fglrxinfo

Code: Select all
glxinfo | grep direct

after i know these things i can better try to come up with our next course of action.

ok fglrxinfo is returning correctly and we have direct rendering. this points me to one of 2 things. we either need to tweak xorg.conf or your resolution is set too high. it could also be an issue with the driver in which case we could have to wait for ati to release a new one. i have to admit while i do use ati graphics there linux drivers are pure crap.

well on to the issue.

open a terminal and run the following

Code: Select all
sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

note: notice how i added sudo at the beginning of the command. what this does is gives you admin (root) privledges. this is need to edit and save this file. please be very careful when using sudo you can do alot of damage. my suggestion is never to to use it unless you have to which is the case here.

try these edits to your xorg.conf. i have highlited the parts you should try in RED

# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Monitor "Configured Monitor"
Device "Configured Video Device"
Defaultdepth 24
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
Driver "fglrx"
Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps" "on"
Option "VideoOverlay" "on"
Option "OpenGLOverlay" "off"
Option "TexturedVideo" "on"
Option "Textured2D" "on"
Option "TexturedXrender" "on"
Option "UseFastTLS" "1"

EndSection

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Generic Keyboard"
Driver "kbd"
Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
Option "XkbLayout" "us"
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Configured Mouse"
Driver "mouse"
Option "CorePointer"
EndSection

Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "Default Layout"
screen "Default Screen"
Option "AIGLX" "True"
EndSection

Section "Module"
Load "glx"
Load "dri"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection

Section "DRI"
Mode 0666
EndSection

after this save the file overwriting it if prompted. then either reboot your pc or restart the xserver (ctrl+alt+backspace). everyone has there preference but i suggest a full reboot.

if this doesnt solve it try a lower display resolution once.

hope this helps.

beyond this im not sure what the problem could be. ive never seen this issue before but then im not much of a gamer either.

Nope, didn't change anything. I did notice that when the game(s) start, the resolution is the same, not matter what I change the setting to using the Screen Resolution option under System>Preferences on my desktop. I put the xorg.conf file back to the way it was after I tried everything.

Thanks for the help. Must just be the drivers for this ati card. All well. I don't need to be playing games anyway. I've got lots of work and an Xbox for gaming :D

Thanks for your time and help drama
