There are some android emulator available in Ubuntu but they are not as stable and usable as bluestack.

Download the SDK

Code: Select all
wget http://dl.google.com/android/android...-linux_x86.tgz
tar -zvxf android-sdk_r10-linux_x86.tgz
cd android-sdk-linux_x86/

Run android manager and install an actual sdk platform
Code: Select all
./tools/android

The go to available packages and install something like SDK Platform 2.3.3

Now go to 'virtual devices' and create a device with the 'target' set to the SDK you installed above

With the device highlighted, click 'start...' on the right hand side

If something doesn't work, you'll need to post exactly what you did and what the errors say

I don't know how to install a phone app in a pc but I know how to install a phone os in a pc.

http://androvm.org/blog/download/

Grab .ova with gapps(Google apps) but not neccesary, all you need really, is to grab an android ova, make sure your internet is bridged, and install text plus, or whatsapp, or whatever you want really. there are other ways to set up sms, I am sure you can even use the provider for the phone you have, but I found this to be the quickest and easiest..but..I am a heavy Android user. The reason you want gapps, is so you can open up the play store, and just download the app through this.

To install the .ova, you need virtualbox. After you download the .ova, open it with virtualbox.

I hope someone has an easier answer!! But this is as far as I got, because I tend to just use an actual droid for this stuff.

If you decide to go with the Android Emulator, choose the virtual CPU carefully. Arm is the default, but the intel atom tends to be better. IF you have the intel HAXM installed however. You may want to switch if the defaults are not satisfactory.

Have some fun with the emulator. Especially if you are proficient in Java.....

First Install Virtual Box if you have not already.

Go to this site-->http://androvm.org/blog/download/

Download " androVM_vbox86p_4.1.1_r6.1-20130222-gapps-houdini-flash.ova"

When you go to download, an option will pop up for it to be installed under VirtualBox, choose that and VBOX will open and install Android for you.

Before Running go into the vbox settings for the Android, and make sure your internet is bridged.

After Running, you will be greeted with the Android screen, if it locks, just move the lock to the right with your mouse.

You will need to set up a gmail account to use the Play Store if you do not have one.

There will be a Circular button that leads to all the Android Apps, click this and find the Play Store.

In the Play Store, Use the Search feature and Find "Text Plus".

Install Text Plus...You will have to set up an account, but this is quite unproblematic(Does not need a phone). After all is said and done, to make a text, go to compose message, and click add...here you add the number you wish to text.

There are some kinks in this, but it does, send and receive messages. Also, if you do upgrade to a smart-phone, it is transferable across devices, iphone, android, etc..

There are more advantages to be had with Android OS using the .iso, and building an apk/obb/android library on the PC.

I have travelled across the US by Bus, keeping in constant contact, using Text Plus. There are many other sms services, and sometimes text plus has problems, but I generally prefer it over most others.
