I've been thinking about that for quite awhile now, however I don't think that I'm the one for the task. I got so frusterated with networking with Vista, I gave up and installed Ultimate Edition on the same computer. Now I have no networking problems :D I agree, that using Samba can be quite confusing and frusterating with Vista, hopefully somebody else here can give a good tutorial on it ;) From what I've heard, XP is much simpler, but couldn't tell you first hand, I've had Vista for a while now and that machine is locked up super tight!
