Ultimate installation problems (Quad Core) HELP!!

Help & support for Ultimate Edition 1.7

Ultimate installation problems (Quad Core) HELP!!

Postby e4foxtrot » Fri Mar 21, 2008 9:56 am

I'm having problems getting Ultimate to install on my new system. I boot fine till I try normal install or safe mode. After about a minute everything just stops. Sometimes Ill get strange characters or a pixialated screen.

What I have attempted to do.

I've tried using a older pci-e card because I thought that may have been the problem.
Tried booting in different screen resolutions.
Reburnt my ISO at a slower speed and verification.
Tried to install the i386 version of Ubuntu.
Used F6 in safe mode and disabled PCI and ACPI, manually set my memory.

I have managed once to get it to start loading without the splash screen and noticed "kernel panic" errors.

My specs:

ASUS P5K3 DELUXE/WIFI-AP LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz LGA 775 Quad-Core Processor Model BX80562Q6600
OCZ Platinum 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666)
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT OC Graphics Card
Western Digital - Raptor X 150GB Internal Hard Drive (O/S will be installed here)
Western Digital - 1TB Internal Hard Drive

I've spent 2 days searching for any help. Not much out there. My previous installations were flawless so I wasn't even expecting this many problems.

When I do get this up and running how much space should I plan on assigning to the /swap partition? I plan on using this as a HTPC and gaming.

I would really like not to having to install windows just to get this system up and running.

Your system is out of my league but you might want to look here.. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=705500.. I didn't see that you did try without splash..it could be kernel related also..hate to push you in another direction..but Hardy has the 2.6.24-12 kernel..it's in Beta now..it is the only Distro that will load after installation on my Lap..it's better than Win....

The only thing I can suggest is installing Ultimate 1.7. Maybe it will have better support than 1.4. The gnome and KDE version is best, then you can try both. pch

i may not be much help as ive only had kernel panic errors once. but ill share my experience. in my case it was due to my ide controller not being fully supported. do you by any chance have any ide hdd's or cd/dvd drives hooked up? or are they all sata?

if you do indeed have ide's hooked up this is something you might try.

Code: Select all
ide=nodma

add that to the end of the bootline

this may or may not fix it. just so you kno tho. if it does work with that comand you ide drives will use pio instead of dma mode. meaning they will b much slower.

as far as swap goes. everyone has there preferences. some say 1.5-2 times the amount of ram you have installed. some say not to go over 2gigs. personally ive always set mine at 1.5gb (1500mb) reguardless of the amount of ram installed. ive nvr had problems with it. i just went up to 1gb ram )left swap at 1.5gb) & my swap hasnt been over 25% used since. like i said its a matter of personal preference i think more than anything.

hope this helps you. if i think of anything else that might help ill let you know. cheers :-)

Is it sata I or sata II..? You might try putting in your live DVD and see if you have a / partition.

My guess is that it has something to do with the quad core. But it is just that ... a guess. As cowboy has found out with his recent experiences with the Hardy release (which 1.7 is not) kernels have a lot to do with compatibility with things. We would really need something else to go off of though. Have you booted in recovery mode from GRUB menu? If so, at what [failed] are you stopping at? Any errors would help with diagnosis.

I don't know if I can boot into recovery mode seeing that I cant get to the point were I can even install it. The only thing Ive tried different so far is trying to boot into safemode, hit ESC and then press ENTER at /boot. After I press ENTER I still have a system that locks up.

I also suspect that the 8800 GT card maybe some of my problem. I'm going to try taking the hard drive out and formating it on my other machine running Ultimate. Anyone think that may help? Cowboy can you point me to a torrent or link were you downloaded Hardy.

I would be surprised if it were a problem with the 8800 GT card. Safe Graphics mode will usually take care of that issue (loading incorrect driver for card). Here's the issue with installing Ultimate Edition on a different machine - Unless machine has exact hardware the installation will load and install drivers for the other hardware then you'll be outta luck if you try to put that drive back into your original machine. I think that what you are running into here is a hardware compatibility issue. Upgrading to a newer kernel might be in order, so if you're feeling brave you should follow cowboy's link to Hardy and see how that works out.
