Unable to delete folders from my storage drive

Help & support for Ultimate Edition 1.7

Unable to delete folders from my storage drive

Postby Brymore » Sun Mar 16, 2008 5:19 pm

I have a storage drive formatted as fat32, since I installed Ultimate Edition 1.7, it tells me I do not own any of the files or folders , as such I cannot delete anything.

I also got this error when I tried installing updates. I have placed a screen shot

I would love any assistance I can get and as simple as can be.

I assume you are a newbie and have 0 problems with that, as your screenshot shows do as it asks, open a terminal applications>>accessorories>>terminal & paste the following:
Code: Select all
sudo dpkg --configure -a

I as well as other mods / admin are here for your disposal. Funny TheeMahn took care of you ;) I usually get the harder posts. I now have time I didn't have before, please post if you can not figure it out.

I want you to understand the sudo I put before it, sudo means you are TheeMahn on your computer (administrative rights), LeadFingers is working on a document for newbies it is currently hosted in the admin section once perfection is met will be moved and set global, makes my F.A.Q. look like a joke.

Kudos Leadfingers,

So I did dat and the screenshot below will tell you what I encountered.

My folders still tell me that I don't own them. And yes, I am a newbie, a very new one at that.

if you havent already tried a reinstall...well even if you have. that kubuntu-docs error is very simple to fix. well all get that error AT FIRST. kubuntu-docs is initially broken in the install. to fix this run the following.

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get remove kubuntu-docs

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install kubuntu-docs

ill give you a small run down of these commands.

sudo: this gives you admin privs...w/o it you cant install or uninstall anything.

apt-get: this is your package manager. this is also needed whenever you install or uninstall anything

install/remove: self-explainitory

kubuntu-docs: again self-explainitory. this is the package your are removing then reinstalling.

as far as the permissions go im not all tha knowledgeable in that dept. ive nvr had probs w/ them so i havent really had to get into it. i would rather have someone else that knows more about that to come along and help you w/ that issue.

cheer:-)

hello,
thought that I would chime in here. There are a couple of ways to do this (change permissions for a drive, directory, file - etc. I think that the easiest is to just run
Code: Select all
sudo nautilus

from within a terminal, then you can change the permissions as you like within nautilus cause you'll have root permissions while your browsing your drives.
Another way to do it is using terminal and entering/ setting up permissions using the chmod command. I can't remember what should be placed as far as sage #'s but I know that if you were to enter
Code: Select all
cd /media
sudo chmod 777 -R /your_drives_name

You would be able to change all permissions (ownership and directory/ file permissions) recursively across the board. The 777 is full read/write/execute for all files and directories for all users and groups and so on.

I want to state for security purposes only the statement Daddy has provided will indeed fix your problem, however open the door for hackers (in an insecure environment). I have posted his exact statement somewhere else on this forum, but informed the user of potential risk. chmod is no light statement if security is an issue, more can be learned about chmod here. Don't be intimidated of the size of the document, we all learn one step at a time, there are things I still don't know.

You will not be able to change ownerships of files on a fat32 partition using chown as it is not supported. Only *nix file systems have this capability.
If you want to change the owner of the files on a VFAT partition, you will need to edit your /etc/fstab file for it and add umask=0000 to the end of your fat partition line. Once your editing is done, delete the umask or your fat partition will be infected in no time!!! If you are using any Windows partition with your linux box make sure you have clam A/V installed and updated.
