Sure!

In a terminal (applications/accessories/Terminal) type
Code: Select all
glxgears

This should open up a window with gears turning.
the terminal window will count & record the FPS (rendered Frames Per Second) in 5 second intervals.
To see how your card compares to others see Benchmarking section in hardware.

Ok a note, the instructions others have given don't work for Dual SLI 8800 GT's in some cases. There is another way for anyone who can't get these instructions to work, I would try those first though!!
First go to System/Administration/Login Window. Then go to the security tab. and check Allow Local System Administrator login. And then go to System/Administration/Users and Groups. And make the root password something you can remember. Now log out. login with un: root and your pw. (This is why I highly suggest you attempt the other ways of doing this FIRST. Go to the Nvidia website and download the latest driver, 169.12 is the current at this time. put it on your desktop and name it nvidia.run. Now press ctrl + alt + f2, now login, username is root and the root pw. Then type
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop

sudo sh /root/Desktop/nvidia.run

follow the instructions. Basicly just say yes to everything, this will configure x and such.

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start

Your done. Now log out and disable the ability to login as root. (follow the first instructions in reverse).
This will configure everything for you. Your all set. Enjoy!

Wish I had 2 8800gt's to confirm this but I really didnt have that much trouble. On boot from live CD I used the generic drivers , then updated which anyone is going to do anyway once they install, Then ran envy and I'm set. It auto recognizes my card and monitor. the only problem I have had regarding this card is when I tried to install the 64bit version I had to hit F6 on boot up and disable acpi install as normal update then ran envy and I'm set. i have tried using Auto and manual on the envy both word perfect. I posted my numbers in hardware forum and I'm running with the big dogs so to speak. once you get your Compiz going you can turn on benchmark and start it using super f12 by default and with a ton of things running I see over 300FPS. If you have the nvidia icon in applications : system tools and you can run glxgears and have good numbers your set. Look in hardware area of forum and compare yours to mine they should be in the ballpark. Mind you mine is a 8800GT OC but with 2 in SLI you should beat me. One last thing remember apples and oranges I run a 22" wide screen with everything cranked up. if your running a 17CRT or a 30" big basturd your numbers will obviously be different.

Its very likely it's my system configuration causing problems. And if you want to check if this will work you can just do it with 1 card. Will work the same I assume. Just another way to do it.
