live cd freezes

Help & support for Ultimate Edition 1.7

live cd freezes

Postby ceminess » Wed Mar 26, 2008 1:51 pm

I know there are a lot of posts about this, and I have gone through them all....Here is my situation...

I am helping a friend install Ultimate Edition 1.7, and every time I try to load the live cd it freezes(It runs really slow and the bottom and top taskbars do not load, but the icons do, and it asks me if I want to listen to music, I can get through all those prompts but when I go to click on install it never loads and eventually freezes), I have tried safe graphics mode and it still freezes. I know the dvd is good because I checked it and used it to install on my OS.

I am wondering if maybe it is his memory that is making it freeze. Here is his system specs.

AMD 2200+
Nvidia TNT 2
256MB of memory

I am going to try VGA=771 and noapic nolapic, and also going to try disabling ACPI in Bios. But before I make a trip over there again I wanted to cover all my options. Is there any other options that might make live cd boot? also Is there a way to install without having to boot live cd?

Thank you!

256 megs of memory is pushing it a bit. Ubuntu suggests 384. I'm running on a box with 320 megs of p100 ram(Maybe because the computer was built circa 1999 it is better built I don't really know for sure). Have at look at getting some more ram maybe another 256. Ram is pretty cheap these days(probably 20 bucks or so). It may run on 256 but you might have to just keep trying to install. The best place to look is at a used computer shop. Just tell the guy you only have 10 bucks, see what he says!!! Take the ram with you if you have to and make sure you get the right stuff or have a look at what's in the box and see what the ram actually is before you waste your money. Even if it's not the ram, it will be a much improved computer with the upgraded ram. Post back if you succeed with the 256. I'm sure a lot of people would be very interested if you get it up and running. There are too many older machines being put out to pasture before their time. I hang onto anything that still works. There is always a distro that will run an older computer. Good Luck, pch

Okay... First of all, pch is right. 256meg of mem is really pushing it. I know you can get Ultimate Edition 1.5 to install on 256 1.6 also but it's slooooww to boot. I never tried 1.7 with that tho, and i doubt if you'll ever get it to boot without adding another 256. Ultimate Edition needs leg room. If you can't get another 256 you can try xubuntu. I've loaded and installed that on an old thinkpad with 256meg and it works perfectly.

Just to let you know - The processor and Vid card is fine. You won't have 3d/compiz with that TNT card but it'll work just fine. Just boost that mem... ;)

Thanks guys, I will just upgrade the memory before I try to install it. It was on the plan to upgrade the computer we were just going to get it to work before hand.

I am converting my friend to linux cause he is tired of windows!

Thanks for the help...I will post an update when I get the system up and running.

Okay....

Just remember that ubuntu will run on that with 512meg. Ultimate Edition has a lot of graphical addons so it's a bit more intensive and needs more... :)
