over the last few weeks i have received documents that have been created with MS publisher, i have tried to open these documents with no success. would it be possible to have an application that would be able to open these type of document??

As far as I am aware, the only application that can open Publisher files is MS Publisher. As a possible alternative, there are so called online conversion 'services' such as this: http://blog.zamzar.com/2008/01/25/conve ... -and-more/
I haven't used it myself, so I cannot comment on it - but it may be an avenue for you to pursue.
